So you said the magic “W” word and now your fate is sealed. The anticipation of a walk has caused a frenzy of excitement and if you want normality and calm again, you better get out walking soon. You’ve never been to the beach together before and what better way to spend a lazy Sunday.
It’s only a 10 minute car journey, what’s the worst that can happen? Well after constant whimpering and a bout of wrenching, you’ve finally arrived at your destination only to find that the boot of your car is soaked through with urine. It’s not quite the relaxing stroll you had in mind.
Dogs love visiting new places for walks. Its fresh surroundings to explore with unfamiliar and intriguing smells, and unknown activities and there’s the potential to meet new playmates. However, getting your dog to the destination can be frustrating as you deal with car sickness, a hyperactive dog clambering around the car and constant barking or howling. Traveling with dogs isn’t as easy as loading your canine family member into the boot or backseat of your car and expecting him to wait patiently until you arrive.
Anyone that has traveled in a puppy’s first car journey can attest to the difficulty in trying to get a dog to sit still and behave in a car. If you’ve been struggling with traveling with your dog, read on for some helpful tips that will make the journey much more enjoyable.
Dealing With Car Sickness
Car sickness or dog motion sickness is more common in pups or younger dogs. This is due to an underdeveloped ear structure which dogs rely on heavily for balance. As the ear structure develops, most dogs will grow out of motion sickness. However, if your dog associates ride in the car with nausea and vomiting, this is unlikely to stop as your pup matures.
Negative past experiences in the car can also result in triggering anxiety and can literally cause your dog to worry himself sick. If your dog was locked in the car for long periods as a puppy, or you only use the car for trips to the vets or the groomers, then of course your dog is going to be apprehensive about traveling.
So what’s the solution for dealing with a queasy dog in the car? Well, there needs to be a positive association created with car trips. This can take time to build and will need to be done in a series of small actions. Food is a great reward with any kind of dog training and getting comfortable inside a vehicle is no exception.
Try feeding your dog in the car or if he is completely fear-stricken, try placing his feeding bowl close to the car, then edging it closer with each feeding session. If you’re still not having any success, use your dog’s favorite treat or something really special, like cold meat or chicken, to entice him into the car.
When inside, keep the doors open and slowly feed him while lavishing with lots of praise. If you can get him to stay in the car, try getting him to relax by sitting with him and talking in a soothing tone while giving long strokes to his mane.
If you’re unfamiliar with the symptoms and treatment options for when your dog is throwing up, read our article about dog car sickness to prepare for the next time your dog is feeling ill.
After this has been repeated several times and you feel your dog is comfortable with being in the car while at rest, the next milestone is going short excursions. Keep these first few rides brief. A trip around the block is more than sufficient for the first couple of times and then gradually increase the duration with each outing.
Hyperactive Dogs
When dogs are comfortable riding in the car, they love for nothing more than to stick their head out of the window and feel the full force of the passing air pull back their gums and ears. You’re sure to see the biggest grins of delight when passing a dog with his head fully stretched out of the window.
However, having your dog jumping from seat to seat as he sticks his head out of each and every window, is not only stressful, but also illegal. Not to mention that in the event of an accident, your dog could get seriously injured as the force from the impact sends him airborne. You wouldn’t let a child ride without a seatbelt, so why would restraining your dog while travelling be any different?
An energetic dog that won’t sit at peace in the car is a huge distraction. You need to have your eyes on the road and your attention on driving, not worrying about your hyperactive dogs’ next movement. Ideally, your dog should be separated from you and then there is no temptation for him to jump on your lap or for you to clap him while driving. A guard rail can be used to divide the boot space from the rest of the car.
Guard rails are affordable and easy to install. A screwdriver set, Allen keys and an adjustable wrench is all that is usually required. Or if you struggle with DIY, someone from the pet store where you purchased the guard rail may be able to help you with installation.
Guards with a mesh instead of bars are more effective for smaller or medium sized dogs. Make the boot space comfortable with some bedding or a blanket and bring along some toys or a chew to provide entertainment for the ride. Leave the back window down to provide adequate circulation to the rear of the car.
If you dog has been crate trained, transporting your dog in a crate provides a safe enclosure. When crate training is done properly, dogs find comfort in their crate and it is often the place where they go to relax and have “down time” when in the house.
Travelling in the crate within the boot of your vehicle is no different and will often make your dog feel secure and bring on those familiar feelings of relaxation. It is one of the safest methods of traveling with your dog provided the crate is anchored to something.
If your boot space is relatively small, harnesses that attach your dog to the safety belt are available. They are often adjustable allowing you to control your dog’s freedom of motion which is great if you allow your dog to stick his head out of the window. However tempting it may be to have your dog ride “shotgun” up front with you, travelling with your dog attached to the rear passenger seats is by far the safest option.
Backseat Barkers
A barking dog can be a huge disturbance to your safe driving practices. Dogs bark in the car for a number of different reasons. Sometimes it is brought on by fear and other times it is the vocal release of excitement and pent up energy. However, if you’re dog isn’t displaying signs off fear, don’t assume his barking is a sign of enjoyment. Barking could still be triggered by anticipation of both a positive or negative experience at the end of the journey.
People, cars, other dogs or just about anything else, provide much excitement for a car bound dog. Dogs become restless sitting for long periods of time and the temptation to bark at moving targets is just too great for some. To address the issue, you’ll need to go back to basics with training.
This works best if you have someone else that can drive while you sit with your dog. During the course of your journey, constantly correct barking with the “No” command or hissing (popularized by Cesar Millan, “The Dog Whisperer”). Reinforce good behavior where there was no barking when passing by targets with lots of praise and a treat.
Once you have overcome barking, it’s time to work on perfecting car etiquette. The perfect car ride would have your dog sit or lie down for the duration of the car journey. If you’re having trouble with a rowdy dog in the car at present, this may seem like a fanciful dream. However, with enough training, it can be achieved. You will require your dog to have a solid understanding of the down command and follow your instruction when in the house or garden.
Similarly, as training your dog not to fear the car, having him sit or lie down when traveling should be learned in a series of steps. First, make him perform the “down” command while near the car, then while he is in the car when stationary, then when the engine is running and finally while on a short trip. Remember, obedience can be achieved with enough repetition and positive reinforcement.
Another solution is to try and distract him from the outside world and keep his mind occupied with toys and treats. Toys that are designed to be chewed, such as “Kong” toys are great boredom breakers. An effective way to keep him entertained for the duration of the trip, is to have a special “car toy” that he only gets when travelling. Long lasting chews such as pig ears and raw hide bones are also wonderful distractions.
If all else fails, try using blinds or sun shades to restrict the view your dog has of his surroundings. Although this hasn’t addressed the issue and is merely putting a band aid on a much larger problem, it may offer temporary respite until you have time to reinforce training or perhaps engage the services of a professional dog trainer.
What About Long Trips?
Long distance traveling with your dog should be avoided until you are certain that he is at ease in the car and has a good track record of obeying commands. Make sure there is enough positive associations with the car created through numerous visits to his favorite spots before attempting long distance travel. If car rides are associated with frolicking in the waves at the beach or swimming in the pond at the park, then you’re dog will be happy to hop in the car wherever you may be going.
Plan your journey well beforehand and make sure there are enough breaks scheduled for toilet outings, feeding and watering, stretching the legs and longer walks if possible. Be sure to prepare for unexpected breakdowns and getting lost, especially if travelling to somewhere you have never been before. Unforeseen events can result in much more time on the road than you had planned for. You should also travel with a full itinerary which should include:
Fresh water;
Food;
Feeding bowls;
Treats;
Chews;
Toys (Pick a selection that is sure to keep your dog’s mind occupied);
Bedding and blankets;
Towels and/or kitchen roll;
Poop bags;
And don’t forget the leads.
We’ve compiled a more detailed list of equipment and practices in our article about dog car safety to keep your dog safe and happy.
If you are travelling for more than a day with a dog and expect to make an overnight stop, it may be more sensible and easier to look at alternative arrangements. A several day cross country trip by car is going to be exhausting for you, but for your four-legged friend, confined to the boot of the car, it will be excruciatingly boring.
Have you thought about accommodation if you’re traveling for several days? Many places will refuse to take pets and just because it says “pet friendly”, doesn’t mean that he will be willing to house your two Great Danes for the night. Always phone first and confirm your accommodation arrangements.
Even if your dog isn’t actually entering the premises and will remain in the car or off grounds, business owners may still be opposed to a potentially barking or howling dog disturbing other guests. To avoid the torment, a few hours on the plane instead of several days in the car could save you both the unneeded stress and hassle. There may be more costs associated with flying your pet across the country, but it could be worth the trade-off for the lower cortisone levels you’ll have.
Long trips in the car should be avoided for the first few journeys unless it is absolutely unavoidable, such as picking up your puppy from a faraway breeder. If a negative experience is formed during early puppy hood, it is almost certain to leave emotional scarring that will require further training to break the link with those fearful associations.
When your dog isn’t quite sure of his environment and also dealing with the stress of being separated from his litter mates, don’t subject him to any more intimidating situations. In the event that you are picking up a puppy from a distant location, have him sit on a blanket beside you while comforting him. Your new puppy will no doubt be shaking and extremely nervy. In this case, you may deem it acceptable to have him on your lap and wrapped in a blanket.
Leaving Your Dog in the Car
Many dog owners have been guilty of leaving their dog in the car for extended periods of time. It doesn’t matter whether you’re just popping into the supermarket for a couple of forgotten groceries or decided to go for a 3 course meal, your dog is still going to be left unattended in a stuffy car. Many people would proclaim that it is acceptable to leave your dog in the car. They reason that it is better than the alternative of leaving your dog at home in an anxious state, but is there any truth to this?
Well the fact is that many dogs die of suffocation each year from being left in vehicles. Often, their owners are responsible dog owners and don’t think they are causing any harm. But it takes as little as 20 minutes of being left alone in a car on a hot day to cause serious injury such as heatstroke, brain damage or even a fatality. Even on mild days, where temperatures are in the low 20’s outside, with constant panting this could raise the inside temperature to a staggering 40-45°c within only an hours’ time.
Dogs aren’t able to regulate their body temperature by skin perspiration like humans can. Instead, they have to control their heat by panting or sweating through their paws. This results in any available oxygen being used up very quickly. Even with using a sun shade or keeping all the windows opened slightly, your dog will still have difficulty breathing.
Dogs left in cars are also vulnerable to teasing and being tormented by passers-by, which may happen if kids or rowdy teenagers spot an unattended dog. In short, it is never truly acceptable to leave your dog in the car and you should plan your outings so there is no chance of it happening.
As I’m sure you’ll already know, traveling with dogs is not always easy. There is nothing more aggravating than dealing with a disorderly dog in the car or more infuriating than cleaning up sickness after every single trip. Plus, there’s the additional preparation work required for even a short five-minute ride to the park. With so stresses and potential hours of training required to fix behavioral problems, you start to wonder if travelling with your dog is worth all the hassle.
However, if you have patience and persist with training you’ll get to experience so much more. You’ll create unforgettable memories and exciting new experiences for both your family and your dog. You’ll discover a whole heap of new places and be able to visit a few familiar favorites that is certain to keep your pooch happy.
Puppies are born with boundless energy and a thirst for life. But did you know that almost 20% of dogs will experience joint issues before they turn one? An astonishing statistic, of course, bringing home the realization of how important it is to get pups started off on the right track.
So, what’s one of the best ways to ensure your puppy’s long-term health? Natural supplements. Now, let’s go ahead and explore why starting your puppy off on natural supplements now could make all the difference.
Why Start Early?
Source: istockphoto.com
Here’s the thing: puppies grow fast. They’ll go from wobbly walkers to full-grown dogs in just a few short months. This fast growth puts a lot of stress on their joints, bones, and muscles. By introducing natural supplements for dogs early into their diet, you can provide the foundational nutrients they need to develop.
But it’s not just joints. Many natural supplements will help with digestion, skin health, and even immunity. Early inclusion means that your puppy will be getting the extra support they need as their body grows and changes. This is no fad; this is long-term health benefits that pay off.
What kind of Supplements Should You Consider?
Not all supplements are created equal, and what works wonderful for an adult dog might not be appropriate for a puppy. Here are some of the best options that are safe and useful for young pups:
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory in nature. They help bring out healthy skin, shiny coats, and brain development in the dogs. For a growing puppy, they can also promote healthy joints.
Many owners can vouch for the fact that once omega-3 fatty acids are included from a tender age in their lives, pups become more energetic and their cognitive function improves. Green-Lipped Mussel is the most beneficial source of Omega, with the highest fatty acid count of any marine derived supplement.
In addition to supporting joint health, omega-3 fatty acids play a significant role in improving overall brain development. Puppies that receive omega-3 from a young age are more alert, have sharper cognitive functions, and often respond better to training. Omega-3 can also boost the immune system, reducing the risk of illnesses during those critical early months of life.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin: You have probably heard those names pop up when talking about joint health. Both of these work together to keep healthy cartilage and cushion the joints – a very important task in these times of rapid growth.
Giving your puppy a natural glucosamine supplement can help prevent joint issues that might develop later on down the line. In other words, an insurance policy to cover their mobility for the rest of their lives. But just check for puppy-friendly formulations to ensure proper dosing is done.
Source: freepik.comProbiotics: Much like humans, canines have also been found to thrive on the basis of a healthy gut. Puppies, while making the transition from milk to solid foods, have rather sensitive digestive systems.
Natural probiotics help in the regularity and movement of digestion, hence reducing tummy trouble. A healthy gut means better absorption of nutrients, too. It is a win-win situation for your growing puppy!
Probiotics can also have a far-reaching impact on a puppy’s overall well-being. A healthy gut contributes to a stronger immune response, which is crucial during puppyhood when they are still building their natural defenses. With the help of probiotics, puppies may experience fewer infections and quicker recovery from illnesses.
Calcium and Phosphorus: Dogs require, especially puppies, a very narrow range of calcium and phosphorus in order to ensure the correct skeletal development. Too little or too much of either can create problems later on. Natural supplements with calcium in them, such as eggshells, can provide that narrow range without the fear of over-supplementation.
Antioxidants: Natural antioxidants, such as vitamin C and E, can be incredibly beneficial for puppies. These compounds help in neutralizing harmful free radicals in the body, supporting long-term health.
By introducing antioxidants into your puppy’s diet, you are giving their immune system extra protection against environmental stressors. Furthermore, antioxidants can also support skin health and promote a shinier coat, complementing the effects of omega-3 fatty acids.
How to Choose the Right Supplement
Source: freepik.com
But when selecting a natural supplement for your puppy, always read the labels carefully. You do not want a number of fillers or artificial ingredients that are not needed. Try sticking to high-quality, natural ingredient products designed for puppies only.
It would also be a great idea to consult with your vet before starting them on any new supplement so that they would surely help you pick up the right one for whatever specific needs your pup may have.
What’s more, you don’t need to load up your puppy with supplements all at once. You can start off with one or two, those that have the most pressing concerns, say their joint health or digestion, and then adjust the same with the growing needs of your puppy.
The Long-Term Payoff
Giving your puppy proper natural supplements now is an investment in their future. This nurturing of growth, joint health, and immunity at such a tender age assures them of a long, active, healthy life.
Just think about building a house, where starting right with the foundation will make all the difference as the structure grows. Supplements are that foundation for your puppy’s health.
You wouldn’t want to wait until problems start piling up before thinking about supplements. Being proactive today will save a lot of health concerns you are going to have to think about tomorrow. And honestly, who doesn’t want the puppies running around, jumping high, and playing around for many years?
Final Thoughts
Starting puppies with natural supplements is not just to add to their health today but to secure their future.
You would, therefore, be able to avoid these very common problems that plague so many dogs in their lifetime: joint problems, digestion troubles, and brittle bones. Exclamation points and all, it is well worth it!
Most of us relish the opportunity to venture out into the world to visit a place we’ve never been, and more often than not, we prefer to share that experience with our closest family members. Choosing the Right Size
Size is as about an important a factor in your choice of dog carrier bag as any other could be. First of all, they are designed to transport small to medium sized breeds. You cannot expect to find one in which to stuff your adult German Shepherd.
That said, your dog should have enough room to stand up, lie down, and move around when all the doors are zipped shut. He should have enough space to feel comfortable and safe at all times while inside. Just like he should in his crate at home.
The larger the bag, however, the harder it will be for you to carry around. Imagine trying to squeeze down the aisle with it in your hands when trying to find your seat on an airplane. You may find it difficult to fit into the back seat of your car or other tight spaces. Also, if there is too much room inside, your pet may feel it is okay to use one side of it as his bathroom.
So choose a carrier that is approximately one-and-a-half times as long as he is, and make sure that he will be able to turn around and give himself a scratch whenever he feels the need. If you have a puppy, consider buying an adult-sized bag that can be partitioned at various points inside. This will help to save you money for future travels with him.
An Emphasis on Durability
If your dog has a crate, it is most likely made of a hard plastic or metal. The frame prevents him from tearing a hole in the side and breaking free in the middle of the night, it keeps him safe from external harm, and it’s easy to cover with a blanket if he won’t stop howling when you have company over for a visit. The bag you choose should be able to perform the same functions, while at the same time, be light enough to carry it with your pet inside.
Much of its construction depends on its size, but you should always pay attention to the material first. Thick fabrics, such as nylon or canvas, are the best because they resist tears from scratching and from external forces.
Remember that you will be lugging it around, so the possibilities of it catching on something sharp, like a protruding nail, are endless. The fabric should also should be washable, colorfast, and most importantly, leak-proof. No matter how well your dog is house trained, there is always a chance for an accident.
Another aspect of durability is quality of stitching. Look for heavy stitching on all the seams of your prospective bag, especially on the type with wire frames. Not only will it need to support the weight of your dog, but the weight of all the accessories you’ll be taking with him too. If a seam begins to come apart in the middle of your journey, odds are the carrier will be useless by the time you get home.
Adequate Ventilation
Source: unsplash.com
In order for a dog to be comfortable in a carrier bag, he needs plenty of ventilation. There should be mesh or wire panels on at least two sides so that there is adequate airflow.
Some models will have up to five areas, and as long as the seams are heavily stitched, the number of panels shouldn’t have much of an impact on its overall durability. Numerous panels also gives your travel companion an opportunity to look around, which will make the unfamiliar smells and sounds a little less intimidating.

Air Travel
It would be a mistake to assume that just because you bought a travel bag for your pet that your airline will allow you to board. Some airlines will allow pets in the cabin, but they usually have specific guidelines on size of the animal and the type of bag. There may even have tighter restrictions during certain seasons. And be prepared for the extra charge, because your carrier will be counted as carry-on baggage.
Airline websites usually include information about their rules and regulations for traveling with pets, but don’t count on them because these policies are always subject to change. Call your airline and make sure to state clearly that you intend to have your companion travel in the cabin with you. They will give you the most current information. If you don’t follow their guidelines, there is a good chance that you and your dog will be left on the tarmac when the plane takes off.
The best carriers for airplane travel should have heavy double stitching, plenty of air vents, a top zipper, and a side door. Removable bottom pads are an advantage when your companion has an accident and, if possible, you should consider purchasing at least two backup pads. You’ll need several internal and external pockets for food, treats, and cleaning supplies.
One of the smartest options for air travel, however, is one with wheels and an extendable handle. Wheels will be a welcome relief for big airports and long layovers, especially if your pet weighs more than 10 pounds. The extendable handle will give you more control when pulling than the standard shoulder strap.
Another item that you should consider is a pouch with a snap or zippered enclosure in which you can secure your pet’s documentation. You never know when you may be asked to produce proof of rabies inoculations, licensing, or other information that may be required somewhere along your trip. You can also include vet health records. Having these papers at the ready will make travel much easier than having to dig through your suitcases at the baggage counter (that is, if you remembered to pack these items at all).
If you intend on doing a lot of traveling with your dog, you should choose a bag that will not attract a lot of attention. Thieves will steal animals just as often as they will any other baggage they can get their hands on. So stay away from bright or florescent colors and ones covered in rhinestones or other flashy decorations. The idea is to get your pet from point A to point B with comfort and as little a hassle as possible, not attract the attention of paparazzi.

Additional Shopping Tips

There are hundreds of options on the market, and it is easy to feel overwhelmed trying to figure out which one is right for you. One thing that will help you filter out many of the choices is to remember, in the end, the bag is a tool. You need to pick one that fits the job you need it for. If you are a biker, the look for lightweight products with rigid frames that can be strapped down to the platform on your bike.
If you care a hiker, look for items that can be converted into backpacks. If you are a frequent flyer, then go with items that are airline-approved. It’s also good practice to pay attention to customer reviews and questions. Someone may have had an experience with the product that could influence your decision or posed a question you didn’t think to ask. Finally, look for accessories such as extra pads and feeding bowls; generic accessories may not fit in your choice.
Pet care companies are not the only companies that are making bags for pets. You have most likely see celebrities toting around their teacup-sized dogs in ones that double as purses. That may be cute for a photo op, but carrying an animal around inside a purse isn’t a humane thing to do. If you are into fashion, however, you should be able to find many high-end designers that make proper carrier. Just keep in mind that the purpose is your dog’s comfort and safety; he couldn’t care less about name stamped on the side.

This features is especially useful during long trips with plenty layover or other stoppage time. This expandable area is easily collapsible, and when not in use, the bag can fold up to the size of a laptop satchel.
Other features include a sturdy wire frame and an adjustable shoulder strap. It comes in three sizes, the largest of which can accommodate dogs up to 18 pounds. The only true downside of this item is that there is such an emphasis on the expandable area, that it doesn’t have room for enough pockets to hold your accessories.

Buying at the Right Time

Timing is another crucial component when buying a travel bag, especially if you bought it for a long trip. If at all possible, you should allow your dog some time to get used to it, much like you would for a new crate.
After all, he will be maybe spending hours at a stretch inside the strange confines. Open it and set it in a room where he normally plays in, and most likely he will take the opportunity to explore it. You could also get him gradually used to traveling by putting him inside for a trip to the nearby pet store.
Eventually, he will grow comfortable laying inside, and may even grow to like it. The more experience he has inside, the more likely he is to rebel when it’s time to take that long trip.
Conclusion
If you love to travel, or if you are away from home more often than you would like, there is no reason you can’t take your pet with you. Whether you go across the town or around the world, owners of small and medium-sized dogs have hundreds of options available that will make for a pleasant experience. But choosing the right bag consists of more than just picking one that pleases the eye.
Take some time to determine the proper size, and consider things like the durability of the fabric, the quantity of ventilation, the number of pockets, how easy it will be to clean while on the go, and if it is airline-approved. By paying more attention to how it functions than how it looks on your shoulder or strapped to your bicycle, you are most likely to choose one that is right for both you and your dog.
In this day and age, we as human beings have come to rely on the automobile for the vast majority of our transportation needs. Whether it is the daily commute to work, going on holiday, visiting someone, or simply wandering around aimlessly looking for adventure, the car is more or less a requirement instead of a luxury.
While it’s true that the car gives us a lot of freedom and a lot of comforts, the same cannot be said about our canine companions, and it’s quite easy to see why.
Cars are designed with the human condition in mind, and the designers make decisions based on human needs in order to achieve comfort. Pets, on the other hand, are given next to no thought during the design process.
That being said, it comes as no surprise that your dog generally has a bad time while in the car. He or she can hardly find a comfortable spot to sit on, and will generally either whimper at you or become increasingly stressed.
Not to mention the fact that dogs have a problem maintaining a comfortable level of balance while in a car, and even though the seats give us more than enough support and comfort, they are generally uncomfortable and quite a challenge for dogs in this regard.
There is a solution, however, currently on the market that will make their lives a lot easier and offer them the same level of comfort that the car interior provides you with. This solution is the dog car seat.
They come in many shapes, sizes and concepts, fulfilling a lot of roles and appealing to almost all dog breeds, however it is very easy to buy the wrong thing for your dog.
What not to buy
When it comes to dog car seats, there are 4 main conditions that must be fulfilled.
The dog must be supported and provided with a surface to lean on, on all 4 sides.
The dog must be able to sit and lay down comfortably on it without having to make compromises.
It must provide at least a basic insulation level through either padding, lining or the material that it is made out of.
The edges of the car seat must not come in above the dog’s chin level, allowing the dog to look around freely and even rest his or her head on the edge.
If a car seat fails to meet even one of these 4 conditions, it is not suitable for your dog.
Something to note here is the fact that some merchants and manufacturers advertise “padded blankets” as being car seats for dogs, with their main punch line being that it will stop your seats from getting covered in dog hair.
While I agree that shedding is an inconvenience and that it can be quite annoying at times to clean the dog hair out of your car, this part of owning a dog comes with the territory.
That blanket is not actually a car seat, but simply a blanket that sits between your dog and the actual seat, the dog not benefitting comfort-wise or space-wise from that blanket.
A small note that can be added here is that you should avoid things that are not padded or lined with anything. If the dog sits directly on the plastic or metal, he or she will get increasingly uncomfortable while traveling, either due to heat or the uncomfortable nature of hard and rough surfaces.
Let’s look at some of the best car seats available for dogs, and see if we can find one that best suits the needs of both yourself and your dog.
1. Snoozer Luxury Lookout
This dog car seat is aimed particularly towards small dog breeds, which don’t really require a lot of space to begin with. This seat meets all the conditions imposed above, and on top of all that it also provides the dog with a direct view of the road ahead.
This is due to the fact that this car seat is designed to be placed on the console / arm rest between the driver and passenger seat, bringing the dog’s head at your shoulder level, and pointing him or her forward.
It is comfortable, it’s secure, and it comes in all the standard interior colors, making this little car seat blend in with any car interior. It is fastened with straps to the console, removing the need to drill holes and use screws, and can easily be removed and stored away if want to go somewhere without the dog.
There are a couple of minor downsides to this car seat that needs to be mentioned here.
Your dog might randomly start sniffing your ear while driving.
It might be a little uncomfortable if you have a stick shifter.
The dog might sneeze on your face.
Dogs tend to be easily distracted by the fast moving scenery around them, and you might find yourself distracted by your own dog.

2. Fuloon Backseat Travel Hammock
This one is aimed more towards medium size dog breeds, and it is what it sounds like, it’s a hammock style car seat in which the dog sits, quite comfortably I might add.
It covers the entire back seat, and it uses straps to attach itself to the back seat headrests, front seat headrests and roof handles. That’s right, this hammock is fastened and secured in 6 places, making it stable and secure.
It’s properly lined and insulated, making the experience a comfortable one for the dog, which has free range of motion as he or she would on the couch back home.
The sides open up to allow the dog to climb in and out, and all you have to do in order to open them or close them up is to pull two zippers.
The sides are high enough to protect the dog and insulate him or her properly, but short enough to allow the dog to easily raise his or her head and check out the surroundings without any effort.
One more thing to add here is the fact that this hammock is waterproof. That being said, your dog is protected against any outside moisture, and so is the actual backseat against any inside moisture.
As with everything, there are some things that might be considered downsides with this car seat, however they are not as drastic as they sound.
This seat can only be used with medium sized breeds. It cannot support the weight of a large breed, and it is too much for a small breed.
It only comes in black with a green inlay print, so if you care about matching it to your interior you might be a bit disappointed.
It’s a bit of a chore to tie the straps and fasten it in every time you want to go somewhere with your dog.
It takes up the entire backseat, meaning that you cannot take other passengers other than the one sitting right next to you.
A small note can be made here in regard to the material used. It’s not a downside by any means, and there are dogs that love it, but the material used is quite thick, and if your dog happens to have a very thick coat, like a husky, he or she might start feeling hot and start moving around in order to release some of the heat.
If you think that this product could be useful for you, then you can buy it from Amazon.
3. Lalawow Car Boot Liner
This one is aimed at the large and giant dog breeds, and even though it might sound a bit strange, it’s not actually a car seat, but rather a very comfortable and at the same time waterproof lining for your trunk.
Before getting all high and mighty on it, remember that this product is aimed towards large and really large breeds, which can’t really sit on the front or back seat. That being said, and if you happen to be the owner of a mini-van / S.U.V. / station wagon, your dog will be more than comfortable in the trunk, with the trunk cover removed of course.
What this liner does is simply line the bottom part of the interior of the trunk, allowing your dog to sit on a warmer and all around more comfortable surface than the actual surface of your trunk, not to mention the fact that it protects the dog from drafts, moisture and other discomforts.
It sports 2 elastic straps which fasten to the backseat headrests, it’s made out of heavy duty waterproof Oxford Fabric, and it comes in 4 colors, to make it easier to match it with your interior.
Before moving on to the downsides of this product, it should be noted that it’s quite easy and at the same time tempting to simply not rake it off after the dog is done using it. However by doing so and carrying things on it repeatedly, you increase the wear and tear on it, making it a lot less comfortable for your dog and shortening the overall life span of the liner.
So what are the downsides to this product?
It’s not actually a car seat
It is not big enough to cover the back of a pickup truck
Your dog will be tempted to play with the edges, sometimes ripping them open
Like this amazing product? Then you can check its price on Amazon.
4. Solvit Tagalong Deluxe
This one is aimed at small and medium sized dogs.
It’s a more compact car seat, designed so that dogs fit snugly inside, and even though its dimensions cover the exact size of a normal car seat, the dog will fit comfortably inside, without it being too tight or uncomfortable.
It’s thick and cozy, however it stretches out a bit, making it so that medium sized dogs don’t find it too tight, and the small ones find it just right.
Unlike the vast majority of car seats for dogs, this one does not come with straps that tie themselves to parts of the seat or the car in general.
Instead, it’s secured with the actual seat belts, keeping it nice and secure, without having to worry about straps, whether or not they have been fastened properly, and other worries that come with them.
Another great thing about this particular car seat is the fact that it actually elevates the dog 9 inches above the normal seat level, making it easier for them to look out the window.
Another thing that differentiates this seat from the rest is the fact that it’s made in layers that can be separated and washed. The material itself is specially designed in order to not trap odors, so you don’t have to worry about that doggy smell when you pick up passengers.
It also comes with a nifty little safety leash which acts more or less like a little seatbelt for dogs.
It’s not all sunshine and roses though, and there are a couple of cons to this particular seat.
Its design allows for only one seatbelt to fasten it diagonally through the interior of the seat, so it might seem a bit wobbly at times.
It’s very snug and cozy, however if you have a dog that has a particularly thick coat, it might cause a small discomfort because of the heat, especially during summer.
It does not come in a wide range of colors, so you might not be able to make it match the interior of the car.
The maximum weight of the dog must exceed 30 pounds.

5. Petego Pet Tube kennel
This one is among the car seats that can be dubbed as being “top of the line” and for a good reason.
This one literally comes with everything that a dog would need.
It comes in different sizes, being able to accommodate all sizes and breeds, it’s lined in such a way that it both insulates and provides a nice refreshing air flow, it’s made out of a claw proof fabric, it can also be adjusted to better suit a particular breed that usually has trouble fitting into such things, it even sports a mesh top that provides shade and protects the dog from excess light.
This, however, is not your normal seat, but rather a kennel.
It is effectively a tube in which the dog sits, and even though some might argue that this restricts the dog’s movement, or it deprives the dog of a certain degree of freedom, that is not the case.
It’s designed so that the dog can peer through the mesh, both through the top and out the sides, being able to look outside, while at the same time being more protected from the sun.
This solution is perfectly suited if you have a dog that tends to be a bit rowdy, especially while in the car. It’s made to take a lot of abuse from a pet, being able to withstand clawing, chewing, and everything else a pet can throw at it.
It sports 3 solid and durable straps that fasten to the backseat, tightly fastening it and making it a lot more stable than other car seats.
It comes in multiple variants. It can cover the entire backseat, just one seat, and they can even be adjusted to custom sizes if the need arises.
When it is not used in order to transport pets, you can fold it up into a thin circular bag and store it easily in the garage or around the house.
As with everything, there are a few downsides to this product.
It is top of the line when it comes to pet transportation, and the price reflects this. It’s a bit more expensive than other solutions however the price is still fair.
It’s covered, like a kennel, and the dog can’t really stand upright, it can, however lay down. That being said, some dogs might not appreciate it, and you might find yourself stopping on long trips to let the dog stretch his or her legs.
Cleaning it is a bit tricky.
If you interested you can buy it from Amazon.
In conclusion
There is quite a bit of choice when it comes to car seats for your pets. Regardless of the breed, the size, the personal preferences of your dog, you can find something that will suit your dog’s needs.
There are still dogs that prefer to tough it out. For some reason, they like the way in which they travel, even without a car seat. It might be because they got used to it, or maybe because they don’t know of any alternatives, however, if your dog is struggling, and you can see that traveling is a stressful thing for him or her, then a dog car seat is what you need.
They can be found online or at specialty shops, and they are quite affordable. Do, however, make sure that you aim to fulfill your dog’s needs, and not to pinch as many pennies as possible.
Remember, the prices are fair, and they are affordable, but they are not the cheapest things on the market.
Our pets accompany us wherever we go. Whether you are going to a local park, or taking a 10 hours ride to a lake far away, our dogs follow us and experience both bad and good sides of travelling.
We’ve all imagined a movie-like scene when there’s a happy ending: you enter the car, your loyal dog and the best friend is on the seat next to you, an awesome song playing on the radio, you step on the gas and drive away while your dog enjoys the ride with his head out to the window. I must admit, that picture does sound amazing, but it puts both you and your dog in danger.
Dog car safety is something you must pay attention to, and this article should help you with that. I presume you have many question concerning the law, preparations, protective accessories and many other topics. The answers can be found here, just keep reading for the next few minutes.
What Does the Law Say?
Source: unsplash.com
According to the U.S. federal law, there are no specific restrictions when it comes to harnessing your dog in a car, but there are some specific state laws. If you’re taking a ride in Hawaii, don’t let a dog in your lap, no matter how small it is, or you may be fined. California and Massachusetts forbid people to put their dog unsecured in an open pick-up truck. New Jersey has a law that does not allow improper transport of animals.
All over U.S.is illegal to transport your dog in a boot of a sedan type car, and to leave your dog in a car unattended, even with a window cracked, as it may cause a heat shock which can be fatal for any dog.
Canada has no laws forbidding a dog to roam free in your car; the only thing you can be fined for is leaving your dog unsecured in a back of a pick-up truck.
Europe has gone one step further and created laws that are stricter regarding this matter. Some European countries prohibit drivers to travel with a loose dog inside their car, and the UK «Highway Code» states that dogs and/or other animals must be restrained so they cannot distract the driver or cause an injury to a driver or themselves in case of an emergency stop.
What Can Go Wrong?
Source: unsplash.com
Just like it’s supposed to be done with an infant, the same applies for your dog. Prevention is the key to save both your canine’s and your life as a dog cannot control itself if a crash occurs and it becomes a projectile that may bounce around the car, hit (and hurt) you or go through a windshield. In any scenario, your dog will get hurt if unprotected, and you may suffer the consequences as well.
A loose dog may jump in your lap, bark, try to lick you or do whatever else he usually does which could create a distraction, and once that happens you may be moments away from a car accident.
These are just some of many possible scenarios that could happen if you do not secure your canine. Caring for its well-being is your responsibility, and that includes learning about dog safety in cars and applying what you’ve learned.
What to Do?
Source: unsplash.com
Prepare for the trip. Supplies necessary for a short trip or a long voyage should be packed in your car on an easy-to-reach place. Here is the list of things you should not forget to bring:
Water — This is a must. You should never leave your dog short of fresh water.
Medication — In case there are any vitamins, pills or any other drugs your dog is taking, don’t forget to bring them with you. This is especially important if your dog is prone to car sickness; to better prepare for this kind of a situation, check out this article on car sickness in dogs.
Leash — You will make breaks. Taking your dog for a walk to do its business or to go sniffing around means a lot, and letting it roam free near a road is never safe, no matter how trained and well behaved your dog is.
Treats — Always reward your dog for good behavior.
Food — Even when travelling, do not let your dog skip its meals. Make a longer break and feed it according to your regular schedule.
Plastic bags — A necessity for cleaning up after your pet.
Chewing toys — Consider bringing at least one for keeping your dog busy and animated during a ride.
Papers — Always carry all the papers about your dog. Passport and documentation of shots may come in handy in some situations.
Dog tag — Whenever you go out with your dog, and especially when on a road trip, put a dog tag on your dog’s collar. It should provide necessary information about the owner, contact number or the address.
Seat cover — Dogs do leave their hair everywhere, it is a natural process, but we can prevent that hair getting on our seats. It takes much longer to clean it off than to install a simple seat cover in your car.
There are certain products made for dog owners that provide a safer ride for all passengers, and these accessories should be included in your car equipment.
We present to you 4 types of accessories and their benefits:
Dog crate — As dogs are naturally den animals, a crate is not something they will consider a prison. This is a perfect choice if your dog is already used to being in a kennel. Crates are considered to be the safest way to transport your pet, a sturdy, high quality crate that is secured to a back seat of your car will lessen the chance of your dog being injured in an accident.
Dog safety belt — A car harness is something like a leash attached to your car’s seat belt, only made stronger to withstand an impact. A well made dog harness does its job pretty well, which was proven on numerous crash tests. Try keeping it as short as possible. Even though your dog will lack in manoeuvre space, a shorter harness will prevent your dog being thrown too far in case of an impact.
NOTE: Never use a neck collar with a car harness (you don’t want your dog hanged)!
Dog seat — An advanced version of a car harness made for small dogs or puppies. Dog seat will keep your pet secured to your back seat while putting it on a higher position so he can look around. They usually come with their own harness you can attach to your dog’s breast am. Make sure they are firmly bond to your backseat. To help you make an easy choice, check out this great article on finding the best dog car seat.
Back seat barrier – A huge number of pet barriers of various types are available in every pet shop. They are designed to keep your dog on a back seat or in a trunk. They are not the safest option out there as a dog is still free and may be injured in case of an accident, but still, it is better than having no measure to secure your dog and yourself.

The third suggestion, Port-A-Dog box is my absolute favorite. It is made of diamond tread aluminium which makes it extremely durable. The last suggestion among dog crates is TRIXIE Pet Products Scratch-Resistant Metallic Crate. This one is exceptionally sturdy, secure and quiet dog crate and it is ideal for home, auto and airline travel as well as commercial uses. It allows you to keep your pet safely restrained and secure in vehicle while driving and it can be attached to seat belts of all vehicles. It is made of nylon and the length is adjustable. Is there anything more to ask for 4.85$?
Solvit’s pet vehicle safety harness is made from special strength-rated material with a breathable mesh safety vest and can fit pets weighting from 45 to 85 pounds(it comes in four sizes). Attaches with heavy-duty straps and full metal connectors with an ease. 1 year warranty and affordable price of 25$ helped this harness get on this list.
An absolute champion among seat belts is Bergan Dog Auto Harness with Tether. It is certificated for meeting an official durability test (V9TD). The minimum durability thresholds are designed to ensure confidence that a harness will withstand forces generated from sudden stops while minimizing distractions from your dog. The harness is durable but lightweight and comfortable and fully adjustable for a dog between 50 and 80 pounds. Check out this 27$ diamond.
My personal favorite, the American Kennel Club 2-in-1 seatbelt harness with adjustable straps for comfort fit, lined chest piece for added comfort and support in the event of a short stop and durable nylon webbed straps for added strength and security; compatible with all cars. The best part is that it quickly converts from seat belt harness to walking harness, thus the name 2-in-1. The price is only 2.99$.
Suggested Dog Seats:
Kurgo Skybox Dog Booster seat is made for dogs up to 30 pounds and can be used on both front and back seats. It is comfortable and machine washable, easily attached to your car’s seat belts. You can get this piece for 39$.
Snoozer dog safety seat is my second choice. Designed for very small pets (up to 12 pounds), it is made of durable polyurethane foam and also machine washable. If you have a small dog or a puppy, this high quality seat is currently on sale for 99$.
We usually get what we pay for. Therefore, my favorite among dog seats is another one made by Snoozer. Designed for dogs up to 25 pounds, it has zipper removable micro suede cover that is machine washable. The best thing about this seat is that it comes with connection strap included for the seat belt to join the harness and the material is comfortable and durable polyurethane foam. The price is 172$.
Another interesting choice the Snoozer Lookout car seat has comfortable foam forms with simulated lamb’s wool interior. It is safe for pets up to 25 pounds. It comes with connection strap included for the seat belt to join the harness and has Sherpa lining for warmth in winter and cool in summer and quilted nylon cover that repels hair. How much more can you ask? It is available for 85$.
Suggested Dog Barriers:
The first one is simple, cheap and effective; the Backseat pet barrier is easily installed and has 2 handy pockets to put in them whatever you need for your canine. Get it for 8.35$.
Highland black universal pet barrier is made for keeping a dog in the cargo area, easy to install and durable, it’s price is 32$.
The Walky Guard adjustable car barrier is the winner in this category. Extremely durable and built with high quality powdered coated steel, it secures your dog on the rear seats. This barrier is also easy to install and remove and everything comes at the price of 80$.
The Pet Net barrier (what a lovely name) is my last addition for this category. Simple, easy to install, remove and pack barrier for the rear seats of your car. The price is 40$.
What Else?
There are few more tips to help you keep your dear pet safe. For example, power windows. If your car has power windows system, it is highly advised to disable them as your dog can easily push the button and open the window. An opened window will attract your dog to pull its head out which can lead to eye, mouth, nose or face injuries.
Also, your dog may fall out of your car which can be fatal at high speed.
Another thing that can help is something you should practice more often: frequent stops. You need to stop from time to time to let your dog do its business (you don’t want that in your car), run around, sniff a bunch of random objects and stretch its legs.
If you are thinking about buying a new car, you should consider getting a pet friendly model (Volvo and Seat have those) that comes with all necessary equipment for a road trip with man’s best friend.
To conclude, traveling is great, taking your dog with you is even better, and feeling secure on the road will reveal the true joy of road trip. After all, the ultimate, best protection for you, your dog and other people in traffic is safe driving. Be a cautious and responsible driver, follow our tips, get on the road and rejoice in your vacation.
Hit the road, take care and enjoy!
Most dogs love car rides and road trips and they are curious about their new surroundings. They pay attention to what they can see from the window or they get tired fast and sleep peacefully for hours. However, there are quadrupeds that are afraid to travel by car, feeling which occurs from the first attempt.
For others, this fear is a consequence of a bad experience that marked them, such as an accident or a visit to the vet. Specialists from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) advise dog owners about what to do in case their pooches suffer from dog car sickness.
Dog transportation by car can be a problem sometimes, if the dog is not accustomed to being in an enclosed space and being moved. The dog may overreact when it is removed from its usual environment, but there are ways to prevent any unpleasant events in the car. Just as people, pooches get sick when they are inside a moving vehicle, experience which is very unpleasant for them.
Often the dog will associate any car ride with the feeling of sickness and it will not want to repeat it. The state of stress and anxiety in a dog appears more frequently in puppies because they are easier to influence than adult dogs. In addition, a puppy’s inner ear is insufficiently developed, so the sensation of movement gives it a feeling of discomfort and loss of balance. As the dog gets older, this problem may disappear by itself.
Symptoms of car sickness that your dog might have
A dog gets car sick easily and its symptoms are obvious. You may already know or assume that the main symptom of such sickness is vomiting. Besides vomiting there are other signs that occur prior to the actual sickness. If you are aware of them, then you can prevent vomiting.
Symptoms such as panting, yawning, heavy salivation, restlessness, tremors or excessive licking of the lips are often met before vomiting. In case you notice any of them or anything similar, you should stop the car and let your dog out to get some air and stretch its legs. Also, it is advisable to give it water and pet it in order to calm down.
Medical causes of car sickness for canine pets
If your dog suffers from motion sickness, you should take it to the veterinarian for a consultation. A dog with such a problem often drools a lot and it might end up vomiting even if its stomach is empty.
If your dog is afraid of cars or does not want to go inside a car without any apparent reason, you should also take it to the vet to rule out any orthopedic problems. Because of them, your dog might not like to jump in and out of the car. Among the other causes, we can count bad experiences, such as accidents or similar events.
Also, when a dog is taken to the vet by car, it will always associate the car with the destination and since going to the vet is not among a dog’s favorite experiences, it might refuse to go or act anxious.
Ways to accustom a dog with car rides
Source: unsplash.com
Even if a dog has a medical problem because of loss of balance in movement, it can still get used to car rides. There are ways you can make your dog’s car ride more pleasant, but these ways take time and a lot of patience from your side.
These steps will definitely pay off in the long run, when you will be able to jump in the car with your beloved pet and travel anywhere you would like. It is recommended for you to try these steps before you resort to medication. Special pills for this sickness exist, but they make your dog very sleepy for a long time.
1. Gradually accustom your dog to your car
You should get inside the car with your pooch and talk to it, reassuring it that everything is fine. You could also try to create a cheerful atmosphere. Do not start the engine of your car the first time.
It is recommended for you to wait for the second training session to do that. However, if your dog seems happy, then you can give it a try. Repeat this experience several times on different occasions until your pooch gets comfortable.
The reward system also works in this situation. Give your dog a treat if it goes inside your car, another one if it stays and another one if it does not react negatively when you start the engine. In case your dog refuses to go inside your car, you should place some treats near the car to get it as close as possible.
Remember to always sit in the driver’s seat because that is where you will be when driving and your puppy should get used to you sitting there.
2. Show your dog how the engine starts
Source: unsplash.com
For really stressed and anxious puppies starting the engine of your car is a negative experience. The main idea is to repeat the steps from point 1 and then also show your dog what your car can do. You can drive for a few minutes and see how it reacts. In time, your dog should get used to the feeling of being inside a moving car and it will become increasingly sure of itself.
Its fear should dissipate immediately after showing signs of comfort. Once you achieve that, you can drive for more than a couple of minutes to study its reaction. Gradually increase the distance traveled with your dog in the car. The car can become a place where your dog gets more attention, so it might really enjoy that.
3. Take breaks when traveling far
Make sure you stop your car every 2 hours when you travel long distances. Let your dog walk a little outside the car and put some water in a bowl in case it needs hydration. Boredom is something your pooch might feel when you drive for a too long, a fact which might determine it to act restless.
That is definitely not something you would want, so try not to skip the regular stops and talk to your dog as soon as you can.
If you travel accompanied by another person, it would be ideal for him or her to sit by your dog and pet it while also talking to it, reassuring it that everything is okay and something cool is going to happen. Giving a dog treats during a car ride is not recommended because it might vomit.
4. Pack a bag for your dog

Water, food, leash, and some of your dog’s favorite toys should be in its bag. Having them close will create a familiar environment for your dog. Also, for its safety, you could buy a special cage for transportation suitable to prevent injury in case of accidents or a simple basket to make it comfortable.
As soon as a dog feels good in your vehicle, it can become an excellent traveling companion. So it is worth training it in order to overcome its initial anxiety and fear. Thorough planning and a few safety precautions will make your trip more enjoyable for both you and your dog.
Treat your puppy’s car sickness
What can I give my dog for car sickness? This is a question that most dog owners ask. The answer is that there are special pills that can be prescribed by a vet, but there are also natural remedies. The main concern would be if the dog you have has actual motion problems or it is just stressed and anxious.
You might figure out the answer by yourself, but it would be better to ask a vet before taking any decision regarding the administration of medicine to your pooch that is apparently suffering from a mild or a severe form of car sickness.

One of the treatments consists of drugs that can be purchased from any pharmacy. However, you should first consult a veterinarian because every dog has specific needs depending on its breed, size, and severity of symptoms. The most commonly used meds for car sickness are antiemetics and antihistamines.
There are many dog owners who do not talk about this problem with the vet, so they might pick the wrong medication because they end up in desperate situations when their dog gets really sick. In order to avoid such a problem, you should ask the vet which meds would be suitable in such a situation.
Some of the meds do not even need a prescription, so that is also a reason why dog owners avoid asking for medical advice. Any pill should be administered to a dog one hour prior to the car ride.
There are also many herbal remedies and homeopathic ones that work for dogs too. These are safe, they do not have side effects and they can prevent car sickness. Ginger or Zingiber officinale Roscoe has a long history of use in the relief of symptoms like nausea, vomiting, indigestion, flatulence, and dizziness.
It primarily works in the digestive tract by enhancing the digestive fluids and neutralizing the acids, fact which makes it an effective alternative to conventional anti-nausea medication. In order to trick your dog to eat some, you should try to mix it with its tasty regular dog food.

Peppermint or menta Piperita relaxes the muscles of the digestive tract and stimulates the flow of digestive juices and natural bile juices. These properties apply to humans, but they are the same in the case of dogs as well.
Moreover, Monopotassium phosphate provides quick relief to a nervous stomach. Other homeopathic remedies are Aconite and Cocculus, which are effective against fear, anxiety, and panic attacks. Pulsatilla vulgaris is a flowering plant meant to calm animals when they suffer from car sickness.
Unlike the others, this flower is particularly useful for dogs that are kept in small spaces where they are not accustomed to being. The administration of these plants should consist of mixing them with dog food.
In addition, there are many more products that contain extracts from flowers, herbs, vitamins, and minerals meant to naturally relieve and release stress. For more information, you can ask at the pet store, veterinarian, or natural products store.
Don’ts when traveling with a dog
Do not try to take your dog for a long drive from the beginning. It will suffer more and you will not help it feel less fearful or anxious.
Do not yell at your dog if it starts vomiting or crying in the car. Verbal or physical punishment does not help it be a better passenger. It will only increase its level of anxiety.
Do not give your dog any medication to treat motion sickness before you talk about your options with the vet.
Do not let your dog sit on the seat beside you. It should have a special place arranged for it on the backseat.
Do not let your dog disturb you while you drive. Purchase a cage for it in case it does not behave. Safety should always come first.
Dogs that don’t get car sick
There are a few dog breeds that are known to respond positively to transportation by car.
Among these dog breeds are the Basset Hound, the Bloodhound, the Border Terrier, the Clumber Spaniel, the English Bulldog, the English Setter, the Flat-coated Retriever, the Great Dane, the Great Pyrenees, the Mastiff, and the Newfoundland.
If you are a person who travels a lot, maybe you should purchase a dog belonging to this breed. You can train your puppy as soon as it will be able to understand you and leave the house safely with the vet’s permission and his or her recommendations.
Prevent motion sickness in dogs
Even if you have already eliminated the stress factors, your dog can still have car sickness, but because of other multiple reasons. Therefore, you will have to make sure your dog is physically prepared to travel. In order to prepare it, you should not feed it for 3 to 4 hours prior to your trip. However, you should not forget to give it plenty of water.
Your dog should be able to drink as much water as it needs before and during the trip. In addition, you should maintain your car ventilated while driving. One of the windows should be opened all the time, but only for about 1 inch, not more. That is what your dog needs in order to get fresh air.

Another important thing is that just like us humans dogs need to look ahead while they are inside a moving car. So, positioning it correctly is very important. You can help your dog have a correct position by buying a special harness for cars, or if you want to, you can opt for a special cage.
It goes without saying that you should drive carefully, avoiding tight turns and sudden movements. While you drive, your dog should be occupied. It should do something to distract its attention. Thus, you should bring a few toys to keep it entertained. When it comes to other things you should bring, you can pack a bag with towels, napkins, and water just in case your dog vomits and you need to clean up.
As mentioned before, taking breaks it very important for your canine pet. You can decide for how long you stop, but it is recommended for the breaks to be taken once every 2 hours. Dogs are sensitive creatures even if they seem tough, so try to be empathic and think of what is best for your pet when you travel.
Even if you run errands, you might leave your dog in your car for too long at one time. So, in any case do not skip breaks because they have a very important role in a dog’s experience with car rides.
Conclusions for puppies with car sickness
Car sickness is not an affection that you can foresee, especially in the case of puppies, but if it happens, it would be ideal for you to know what to do. If it has already happened, then you can follow the steps described above and try to educate your dog to ride a car like a pro. However, if your pooch is affected in a serious way, then you can consider the administration of medication that is prescribed by the vet.
Remember not to give your pup any medicine that is not recommended by the vet. You can ask about herbal and homeopathic treatments before you choose a more invasive treatment that might cause your dog to feel sleepy and look lifeless for the entire road trip and a few hours after it ends. Safety comes first, so do not jeopardize your dog’s health by ignoring its symptoms and anxieties.
For those of us who want to take an extended trip or just don’t like kenneling our dogs, the issue of dogs on planes is bound to crop up at some point during our long-distance travel plans. It is not always practical to drive everywhere you’re going and holidaying with your hound is sometimes tough without taking it to the air.
In this article, we’re going to take a look at some of the issues around getting your puppy on a flight and also dig a bit deeper into what you can expect from customs officials (if you’re traveling internationally) and from the airlines themselves.
We’ll also drill down on the issue of ticket pricing. Even though they don’t usually ride in the cabin, an airline ticket for your pet can often cost you more than a ticket for yourself. Dog lovers don’t care though and the chance to take our furry buddies on vacation is worth every dollar.
Later on in the article, we will also have a look at dog-friendly hotels and what you can expect from accommodation providers when you arrive at the front desk with your best friend in tow.
Important Things to Consider
Unfortunately, even though they do allow dogs on airplanes, you’re going to end up having to check your pooch in as luggage at a facility outside of the main terminal in most places. There are also some pretty stringent regulations that you’re going to have to keep to if everyone is going to successfully make it onto that flight.
Dog carriers. You can’t just have your pet in any old carrier. There are specially approved carriers that you’re going to need to buy before you head out on your big adventure. If you need some help choosing one then talk to your vet or a local pet store, they will most probably know what is required by the authorities in your area.
If you’d like to see the kinds of carriers that are available in the market, we have a detailed article on what you should look for in a dog travel bag.
Your pet’s health. No carrier is going to allow an animal that is not 100% up to date with its vaccinations to travel. The likelihood is that there will be other dogs traveling in close proximity and if your dog has some sort of nasties then they may spread. Again, talk to your vet here about what shots you’ll need to get up to date and what documentation you’ll need for the authorities at your chosen airport.
Food and drink. In the United States, the USDA requires that pets are fed no less than four hours before a flight. That means that if you’re taking your dog on a plane you’ll need to manage this. If you’re not far from the airport then chances are that you can feed him just before you leave the house. Either way, make sure that the dog is nourished but will not be traveling with a full stomach.
Exercise your pet. All dogs just love walkies. It will calm them down and get them in the right frame of mind to be confined during their journey. Take them for a good long walk before you leave the house and be sure to give them a little stroll around somewhere near the terminal just before you check them in. You’ll also need to be sure to get them out for a walk as soon as you arrive at your destination.
Consider the weather. If you live somewhere with extremes of heat and cold be aware that a flight delay could mean your dog is uncomfortable. Try to choose a clement time of day for your flight. In summer aim for the early morning or in the evening.
To sedate or not to sedate. Many pet owners will ask the vet to provide medication to sedate their animal during the flight. Most responsible owners won’t choose to do this unless they have to though. If your dog is likely to be agitated or hyperactive (especially if it might somehow hurt itself in flight as a result) then this is something that you need to consider and talk with your animal health professional about.
You can take your dog on a plane, but in order for it to be a raging success, it is extremely important that you take all of the above into consideration.
Not sure what else you should bring with you to ensure your dog is comfortable? Take a look at our article that tells you how to fully prepare when you’re flying with your dog.
Failing to do so could result in harm to your pet, an uncomfortable trip or even having to completely cancel your travel plans.
Important Notes About Going Overseas
There are plenty of people who take their dog with them internationally but depending on where you’re going this can be somewhat complicated. No matter where you’re going you’ll need evidence that your dog is 100% up to date as far as vaccinations and their general state of health go.
The problem is that different countries have different rules about what dogs need to be treated for and that means that you may find yourself separated from your best friend if they get forced into quarantine.
What quarantine really boils down to for pooches, is rabies. Some countries have eradicated it, some countries have it under control and others still haven’t gotten on top of things.
If you’re traveling between two rabies-free countries you will have a very easy experience but if you’re not you could find yourself subject to enforced quarantine periods which can be lengthy and expensive.
In most cases, while your pet is quarantined you will have to pay a substantial daily fee for kenneling and you could also be restricted from visiting your animal freely.
There is something called blood teeter test which can be conducted sometime before your journey which some countries will accept. There are certain countries that just will not allow dogs from countries that do not have rabies under control to enter. It’s going to be very important to talk to your travel agent on this one or you could find yourself in a lot of hot water.
For dogs that travel regularly, it is probably worth investigating getting them a “pet passport”. This is a sort of a pre-clearance that makes crossing the border a lot easier for you and your pet. It can also save a lot of money on clearances and quarantines.
Important Notes About Traveling in the US
Pretty much any time you’re going to take a dog from one state to another in the USA you’re going to have to be prepared to furnish health papers if you’re queried.
If you make a decision to take your dog with you interstate then it’s important that you check with your vet what documents you’re likely to be asked for in the event that you’re stopped. This is generally nothing more than a formality and it’s unlikely to cause you any serious problems if you make sure you are well prepared.
Just like with international travel, make sure you consult with the relevant authorities in your area and those you’ll be traveling through, and lean on your veterinary professional for help navigating the requirements.
Thousands of people do take their dogs interstate with them every single year so there’s usually nothing to worry about. Also, even though you’re in the same country you need to be aware that rules change from place to place so you may not be as free (or you may be freer) to do what you want with your dog while you’re out of town.
We have a great article you should take a look at that spells out exactly what the policies and requirements are when traveling with your dog by plane.
Destination Considerations
If you’re heading somewhere you haven’t been before it’s going to be extremely important that you get the lay of the land before departure.
You need to know about where you can and can’t take your pet while you’re there, and what you’re going to be doing about accommodation. Additionally, if you’re planning on renting a vehicle you’ll need to check with the rental company if they will allow you to have your dog in the car with you.
A quick internet search of your destination followed by the phrase pet-friendly hotels will usually yield some good results.
When you book your room they’ll probably also be able to give you some advice on appropriate transport for you and the pooch from the airport to the property. If your dog is normally outside or an inside dog you’ll need to check what facilities are in place at the hotel as well.
Pet-friendly hotels are (obviously) used to accommodate people with pets and they understand that these customers have different needs than those who are traveling without them.
Make sure you ask at the front desk to get all the relevant information about the local area. Here is a list of things you’ll need to cross-check to make sure nothing goes wrong:
If you’re by the coast what beaches is your dog allowed on and at what times can you take it there. Different jurisdictions have different rules on this, some will impose dog-free times during the day when the beach is busy and others will just not allow dogs on beaches at all. Usually, there will be at least one beach in each area that allows dogs on it but in order to make sure you’re not going to fall afoul of the law it’s up to you to identify it and stick to the rules.
The same applies to parks as applies to beaches.
Different countries and areas within them also have different rules when it comes to cleaning up after your dog has relieved itself. It’s very important that you familiarize yourself with these early on to avoid getting fined.
It’s a good idea to find out where the nearest vet is in case something goes wrong too.
Insurance Issues
You’ve probably got some kind of insurance for your pet already but you’re going to need to read your policy document (or check with your insurer) to find out if it applies while you’re out of town. Remember that if your dog hurts someone while you’re in a strange place it could get very expensive for you if you’re not properly covered.
There are a number of insurers that offer travel insurance for pets but be sure to do your research and ask all the right questions. A few of the things you’ll want to dig deeper on include:
What happens if your dog gets sick on the plane, what emergency treatment cover do you have in place.
What if your dog gets very ill while overseas, what arrangements are there for the costs of your and their journey if you get stuck somewhere while they’re in recovery.
To what levels and for what conditions do you have veterinary costs covered while you’re away?
How does the policy work? Are you expected to front the expenses and then claim them back or are there some other arrangements in place?
If you are traveling internationally it is very important that you make sure the country you’re heading to isn’t excluded from your policy. Be sure to be as complete as possible during your discussions with your insurer.
People are traveling overseas and interstate with their dogs more and more often these days so any decent insurer will be ready to field these questions for you.
As with anything though if you don’t ask the questions they’re not going to be answered so that means it is on you to check out the terms and conditions of the individual policy.
How Much Does It Cost?
When you’re asking yourself how much it’s going to cost to take a flight with your dog it is not just about the airline ticket. There are also going to be associated costs with things like consultations with your vet and obtaining the relevant paperwork. It is also really important that you don’t choose the plane ticket for your dog based purely on price.
Hundreds of dogs a year die from heat-related deaths while they’re in the cargo hold of aircraft and that means that you really do need to check the track record of the carrier you choose. Cheaper is not always better, especially when we’re talking about such an important member of your family.
You’re also going to need to make sure that you’ve got travel to and from the airport covered when you’re working out the amount you’re going to pay. In many places, taxi cabs will either refuse to carry or charge a fee for transporting your pet so be sure to check that out before departure.
What Are the Dangers?
Dogs that are not used to traveling can become agitated and harm themselves. There are cases of dogs breaking out of enclosures inflight and hurting themselves in the baggage hold as well. If you want to be completely safe it’s best to leave your dog at home while you’re away.
That said thousands of dogs travel very long distances every single day of the week so chances are that you won’t have any problems if you plan everything properly.
Here are some of the things that can go wrong:
On long trips, dogs can become restless and hurt themselves (this is one of the reasons why a proper carrier is a must-have)
Poorly closed carriers can result in dogs escaping in flight. If they’re in the baggage hold this can be an unmitigated catastrophe.
If dogs are fed too close to a flight then they can become airsick and make a mess, this also comes with a risk of dehydration.
As you can see, it basically comes down to preparedness. If you want a hassle-free journey with your pampered pooch then just make sure that you (and them) are properly prepared prior to embarkation.
Is It Worth It?
That is a question that can only be answered by the individual who owns the dog. You know your animal, their temperament and you are the best person to make the judgment call about taking them on an airplane.
Taking your dog on holiday makes your family complete while you’re on vacation so it’s an extremely rewarding thing for the entire family group.
That said, if something goes wrong then it could also put a serious damper on the trip, could cost a lot of money, and could also result in harm coming to your pet.
You’ve got to really make the decisions seriously, make sure that you work with your insurance company and your vet, and make sure that you choose the right carrier and accommodation.
If you prepare as fully as you can, then chances are that you’ll have no problems at all.
There are many owners that just can’t leave their dogs alone and like to carry them wherever they go.
After all, a dog is your favorite companion and you should be able to enjoy his company in every type of situation. But how do you bring your dog to the places you want to go to without hassle?
Well, maybe the most common way of enjoying Fido’s companionship for a casual walk is a strap. But for long travels, you may need to have a backpack to carry dogs along with you.
For many dog owners, bringing their pets with them when traveling may not be the first choice. There are several reasons for this but the most important one is that it would be very difficult to carry them.
Another important one would be the safety of their pet dog especially for small breeds as they can be easily missed and it would be much easier to have them around in a backpack or dog carrier rather than carrying them in your hands.
The offer in this area is wide and you can choose from various models available on the market. But before getting into the details of choosing the right dog backpack for you, let’s further explain the importance of having a backpack to carry your dog around.
Uses of Backpack Dog Carriers
The use of backpacks to carry dogs would depend on the design of the dog carrier itself. Here are the things that you should remember and look for in a backpack dog carrier:
It should have a removable and washable cloth for easy cleaning
It should have a safety collar attached to the backpack so that your dog will not escape from the carrier
Some carriers can be used as a seat for the dog in the car and you solve two problems with only one thing
You can wear the backpack dog carrier like a backpack when you are traveling
Choose a carrier that you think is most comfortable for your dog to be in
This list may be quite short but, in the end, it depends on your preference as to what you need and how you want it to be. Also you must take into consideration Fido’s preferences. If he’s not picky when it comes to color he will be when it comes to fabric and size so make sure he is comfortable in there.
Characteristics of a Good Quality Backpack Carrier for Dogs
Zipper With Locking Device
The most important thing that you should consider when choosing the right backpack for your dog is safety. Make sure that the zipper has a locking device and that it can only be opened from the outside.
This would prevent your dog from escaping the backpack. You wouldn’t want your pooch running around on the plane right? And if you’re going on a long flight with Fido, check our other article on safety tips when flying with your pooch.
Good Support, Durable Design and Structure
The shape and weight of the backpack is the key for easy carrying. Prepare your dog carrier such that you make sure of your dog’s safety and enjoyment. Fill the dog carrier with toys or treats for your dog to play with while traveling but make sure that these are only as heavy as your dog.
Our article on the top dog treats that your dog will love is a must-read. The dog carrier should not collapse especially in the middle section. It should also have a hard and sturdy base to properly carry your dog and not sag.
Also, check the strap and try it on. It should be comfortable for you to wear when you are carrying the backpack with your dog inside.
Material of the Dog Carrier
Choose a carrier that is made from high-quality and sanitary material. Your dogs might shed some hair and leave crumbs from the treats when they are inside the carrier.
This characteristic is especially important for dogs that are still in training and are not used to being in the carrier.
Pick base support that is made from a material that is easy to clean and can hold liquid while you can’t clean it yet. Don’t pick a dog carrier with a wooden board as support.
Choose the Backpack According to Use
The dog carrier that you choose would largely depend on the intended use and, more importantly, the price.
There are many occasions when you’ll be needing this bog backpack and we’re going to discuss some of the most important ones so you can make of an idea of its importance in your life.
When You Visit the Veterinarian
You would need something that is simple and can be easily stored. Choose a design that would be best suited for everyone in your family. Try it on to see if it’s easy for you to carry and if you can adjust it in such a way that it is comfortable.
Think that your dog may be sick when you carry it to the vet so he needs to have space and feel comfortable in there.
When You Travel by Airplane
Look for a backpack dog carrier that is flexible and should have a good support. When you are buying a ticket for your ride, you may want to check out the standard or common space measurement under the airplane seat.
Preferably the airplane to where you are going to ride. You must also watch out for the weight limit for the baggage that can be taken with you while on flight. Some airlines have the center seat of their plane to have more space and the aisle has the least.
When You Are Traveling by Bus or Train
Some companies in the US, about 20%, allow their employees to bring their pets with them. It actually makes them less distracted with their work since they know they have their pets with them in their desks.
Since buses and trains are considered as public transportation, it is required that if you bring your pets with you, they should be in a fully closed dog carrier.
Find a dog carrier that has a safety lock and is fully closed. Also, an extra compartment on the carrier can be very helpful for you to store your laptop or business documents.
When You Travel by Car or Motorcycle
If you are traveling by car or motorcycle, your first concern would be safety. Make sure that your pet carrier can be secured by a strap to your car seat or body.
For those who are traveling by car, it is recommended that the carrier is equipped with a security leash and is enclosed.
This should be the main consideration so that when the car suddenly stops, your dog won’t be thrown out. If you are riding a bike or motorcycle, make sure that the backpack pet carrier can be strapped securely to your body.
Choose the Backpack Dog Carrier That Fits Your Dog’s Size
Dog carriers come in different sizes to fit your dog’s size and structure as well. The dimensions of the backpack carriers might vary from one brand to another but it’s basically labeled as a petite, extra small, small, medium, large and extra-large.
The maximum weight at which the backpack dog carrier can carry would also vary with the size.
