This is a must-read article if your puppy is biting continually, chewing your furniture, or being aggressive at an early few weeks of age.
Me and my wife always wanted to adopt a puppy but never knew the amount of work that was involved. The main problem that we faced was how to stop our puppy from biting.
My grandma whom I love to bits visits all the time. She is 81 years old and very frail however she’s a healthy woman for her age let me tell you that.
The only problem is my pup continuously bites her and because she’s frail and has thin blood, she breaks her skin and she starts to bleed.
I could put my puppy on a leash when she visits but even knowing how much she bites her my grandmother loves him and she makes her happy.
Source: unsplash.com
But… about 3 weeks ago something terrifying happened.
My grandma was over for a visit to our house and she picked up Rozi my pup. Everything was ok but suddenly she bit her and wouldn’t stop.
There was blood everywhere, kind of like a murder scene and we had to take my grandmother off to the doctors. Sadly things got worse because the bite caused an infection and made her very ill.
Thankfully she is fine now but we feel so bad we almost had to get rid of Rozi but my grandmother wouldn’t let us, she’s a huge dog lover.
We just had to find a way in order to stop her from biting!
Source: unsplash.com
So I searched google for keywords like ‘stop dog from biting’, ‘how to stop your puppy from biting, and ‘why do puppies bite’.
After searching for days and reading I found a really good eBook called brain training 4 dogs She teaches everything and so far in just two weeks my pup is potty trained, rarely bites and I’ve taught him a few tricks as well.
In the brain training 4 dogs online training program she recommends some chew toys for puppies. So I jumped on Amazon and found the squeaky bone chew toy which is now Rozi’s favorite toy. He loves it!
Now when my grandma visits us, Rozi is an extremely well-behaved puppy and she can pat her without biting her.
A dog’s greatest strength is its ability to forgive.
Why Dog Quotes Are So Popular
Source: unsplash.com
Recently, a friend asked me to write a list of dog quotes. I had intended to set up some way of doing this, but in the end I had a completely different idea.
The first thing to note is that no matter how good you try to make your list, it is always going to be less impressive than an actual conversation with the owner of the dog.
And no matter how well you try to get the content right, you can’t really anticipate what will make for a funny quote or interesting anecdote. The best thing is just to provide a few examples that worked for you.
“My cat sits on my lap and watches me eat.” (not so funny — but I didn’t know what else to say!)
Here are some more ideas:
Source: unsplash.com
“I love dogs so much that I eat them when they’re dead.”
“When I was 8 years old, my parents brought home a puppy. When he disappeared at night, we searched for him until morning came and our search was hopeless!” (This one may have been inspired by an analogy with Jesus)
When we were kids… we were gonna grow up and buy our own doggy restaurant! We named it ‘Pup’…’cause dogs were popular back then!” (The next time someone tells me they are doing something related to this topic, tell them about this one.)
If you want more items like these:
“Since we got our first goat last year… it has been impossible for me not to eat it!”
“How come your cat can only sit on your lap?”
“What do you think makes this nice little soup smell so good?” etc., etc., etc.
If nothing else, just share some of these things with people who have a particular interest in dogs or other animals — they will appreciate them. It is never too late to fall in

The Schwinn Dog Bike Trailer is a dog-powered scooter with a built-in trailer. The trailer mounts on the bike and has an adjustable handlebar.
It can be used while the bike is folded up in the vehicle, and also as a stand-alone scooter. The trailer has many features like an LED lighting system and sound/music system to make it more appealing for your dog or cat!
What Is a Trailer Bike?
If you haven’t seen the trailer bike craze, check out this video:
The trailer bike is a competitor to the two-wheeler, but it’s not just a two-wheeler. It is a vehicle meant for hauling trailers on your roof. Surprisingly enough, they are sold in the United States and are popular with truckers who need to get their rig up and down over rough terrain or who work in areas where roads aren’t as flat as they would like.
It’s also surprisingly difficult to find a site that has one for sale, so I thought I would break down what makes this such a crowded game and why people love it so much.
The first thing you should know about these things is that they can actually be quite expensive. You can find them from $6,000 up to $20,000 or more depending on whether you buy the base model or add on some of the extras (brand new ones cost about $10,000).
They are fairly heavy so you need to have a lot of space around your home (or driveway) and be able to rear them up from underneath (they don’t fit under normal cars). If everything goes right though (and if you aren’t another UPS man) they should come with all these features:
They will roll over any surface — even grass — without hesitation
They will handle anything that might cause damage — including snow blowing into their path
They will not rust (even after thousands of miles behind the wheel)
You can even attach them to your car’s bumper using an outrigger bar in place of rear tire support rods
Their tires never need air; instead, they use an air compressor system inside which inflates them automatically when needed.
Advantages of Trailer Bikes
Source: dailypaws.com
After almost 30 years of riding bikes, I still haven’t found a trailer bike to suit me. There are some that are made for touring, but they tend to be of poor quality, with cheap frames and heavy-duty shocks. The Schwinn dog bike trailer is a nice-looking piece of equipment that seems to be in high demand but lacks the off-road performance I want. It’s more suited for the trails in town and on paved roads.
The Schwinn dog bike trailer (SDB) is a bicycle trailer that comes with a foot-operated brake (FOB). It’s designed for bicycles that weigh up to 45 kg (99 lbs.). The SDB is equipped with an automatic brake release system which is activated by the Pedal Position sensor in your bicycle.
You can easily control the FOB by selecting the desired position on your handlebar switch and then letting go of it long enough to stop pedaling. The SDB works with any bicycles that have an adjustable seat post or seat clamp (which includes most road and mountain bikes).
In order to use this product, you need to buy at least one SDB kit from schwinnDogBike. Once you have bought your SDB kit from schwinnDogBike you will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to assemble the SDB and start using it on your bike.
I recommend this product because it offers me what I need for my daily rides without costing too much money. There are many competitors in this category but none of them offer what I need – FTP, wind resistance, and comfort – for around $400 including shipping costs!
Trailer Bike Choices
Source: proactivepetproducts.com
Schwinn dog bike trailers are an interesting case. We thought we were the only ones doing them well, but then we stumbled across a few other companies that make them and their business models look pretty similar.
We’ve defined our market for a couple of years now, and each time we’ve tried to sell our products there have been three main questions:
What do you need?
How is it different from what you already have?
How is it better?
The first question is the most important, but after that comes the second and third. This is where it gets complicated because you can either offer something new or something different. And often those differences are only subtle enough that they are hard to see. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t important: there may be ones which help you to solve a new problem in your market or give you an entirely new set of benefits.
In any case, if you want to be successful in selling your product, you should think about offering something different from other competitors (and everything else). Look at how others do it; understand why they do it; ask yourself whether there really isn’t anything better out there (be creative here); and then compare how your product does in practice against others: if you are correct about your answer, then offer something different!
How to Choose the Best Trailer Bike for You
Bike trailers are a little confusing, as there are so many different companies making them, ranging from the cheap and cheerful to the ultra-popular. In this post, I’d like to try to make sense of it for you.
These days, a lot of people buy trailers for use on their bikes. Why? Well, buying a bike trailer can be an incredibly efficient way to move your bike around — especially if you live in a city where parking is expensive (or nearby). However, there is more to it than that.
If you want your bike trailer to fit into the aesthetic vision you have of how your bike should look — and in case you don’t know what that might look like — then perhaps what I’ll say next will help with that decision.
Bike trailers can be as simple or as complex as you want them to be and also just as expensive (the cheapest ones are usually about $100 each). If you think about it, there are several different types of trailers available: full-size (sometimes called “chassis”), semi-folding or folding (sometimes called “full-rig”), and folding (sometimes called “half-rig”).
The difference between them all is largely down to style; all these products can either be stacked on top of one another or they can all fold up into something similar to a tent.
The most popular style also seems to be the most complex: one that stacks on top of one another and which also has a frame rather than just being pieces of canvas stretched over each other.
For example, the Schwinn Dog Bike Trailer is made by Custom Trailers — which makes some very nice products though they sell out very quickly when they get popular; however, this one looks like they took all those components out of some other product found in any hardware store and put it together themselves.
This fits in with my earlier point about how much simpler things should look: you might not be able to tell what type of trailer it was until after assembly had started but when it went together perfectly, maybe it looked super sophisticated and fun at the same time. Which makes sense because who wouldn’t want such an elegant solution for moving their bike around?
The Schwinn Dog Bike Trailer does indeed come with wheels! This is a huge advantage over some other products available but even so, this isn’t typically something that people who already have bikes will
How to Choose the Right Bike for a Trailer
Source: unsplash.com
We have been using a Schwinn dog bike trailer for the last several years and we have found it to be just about perfect for our needs.
The trailer is made by Schwinn, and they use a frame of steel with a unibody design that is very light and extremely robust. Our dog uses the trailer to ride her doggie bike around the neighborhood on very rough terrain, so crud is a big part of the equation in choosing what bike to use. We’ve seen other trailers that are made from bamboo, which is much more expensive than steel, but we feel that carbon fiber’s strength and versatility make it the best choice.
We aren’t planning on taking our trailer on any camping trips or extreme adventures where water resistance would be critical. We don’t anticipate using it as a motorcycle carrier at all, as we don’t want to take any chances with our dog snagging his tail bar or something else that might cause an accident.
We are not looking for anything fancy – just a reliable, easy-to-use product that will get us from point A to point B without too much trouble when necessary. We have never had any issues with this product, but we understand if others have had difficulties with it; please let us know if you encounter any problems!

In my earlier post, I discussed the importance of choosing the correct size for your bike. In this post, I will discuss the proper size for your dog.
The idea of choosing the right size bike for your dog is a little bit complicated and you should do careful research before buying an expensive dog bike. The bikes differ in their components and optical systems, which makes selecting the right one difficult. In this post, I will cover some of the basics first.
There are some basic things that every dog owner should know before buying a bigger bike:
The bigger bikes have more room to put stuff in, but you can’t store more than one animal inside it at a time (unless it is designed for it). This means that if you want to ride with two dogs at once, you need to buy two bigger bikes or one regular bike and trailer and attach the trailer to it.
You will never be able to ride on city streets with two dogs riding together because they wouldn’t fit through most doorways and their bikes would not meet the standard safety standards of many cities (as mentioned earlier by Marc Andreessen).
If you plan on taking your dog out on longer rides, make sure it has an adjustable handlebar or seat (it should have enough space between you and your dog) so that you can adjust its height to meet your own height requirements (which varies depending on what country you are from).
Some larger bikes can be used as trailers too (the maximum dimensions for trailers are about 17 feet long by 8 feet wide by 6 feet tall), but many don’t come with them built-in because they would require additional equipment like tires, lights, etc., which isn’t included with most trailers. Some trailers also look more like cars than bicycles (like this one) making them less attractive for some people looking for a trailer-bike combination.
The questions above are general ones: as long as there is enough room inside the bike for your dog’s needs, there shouldn’t be any issues if he/she fits into it comfortably. The key thing when determining whether or not a bike fits is how much room there is somewhere else besides inside the bike itself — so make sure that he/she fits comfortably next to where his/her legs connect to his/her body — not where his/her back connects to his/her body!
I don’t know if you’ve heard of Dogfish Head Brewery (they make good beer). I’ll bet you haven’t. They have a very cool “Beer School” series of videos where they teach people how to craft beer at home. I was impressed with their funny and engaging way of explaining brewing techniques.
There is a lot that isn’t obvious about how to brew beer, like the right proportions of hops and yeast. It’s not an easy process. But once you get the hang of it, you can use your skills to create something really special. Here are some things you should always remember when brewing beer:
The primary fermentation (the process by which yeast converts a sugar source into alcohol) happens in the wort, a mixture of water and fermentable sugars called alcohol (or simply wort).
The secondary fermentation (the process by which yeast converts sugars in the wort into alcohol) is done in a secondary fermentation tank, where there is an airlock to keep out oxygen and a bubbler to let out carbon dioxide bubbles so the yeast can work on your wort.
When it comes time for bottling or kegging, your goal is to get as much clean liquid back into the bottle as possible while minimizing the number of gases produced by fermentation inside it.
Here are some tips for achieving this:
If possible, use draft-type equipment: This eliminates any pressure buildup inside the bottles that could lead to carbonation problems later on.
Don’t store your beer in polybags – they are porous, which means they will absorb more carbonation than polyvinyl chloride bags would allow.
Use corn yards – these are bags made from polypropylene or polyethylene that are lined with cotton or wool – this helps remove any unwanted gases from getting out before being bottled or kegged too quickly inside plastic bottles/cans because there is no room for them to escape during bottling/kegging time!

Nutrition is one of the most important aspects of pet care – a varied and well-balanced diet greatly contributes to dogs’ overall health and wellbeing and can ward off various diseases.
That’s why your dog’s nutrition plan should be your primary focus. Young pups, adult dogs, and elderly animals have different nutrition and diet requirements. Knowing how to provide your canine friend with the best diet is essential to keeping him or her healthy and happy.
Fortunately, there are numerous commercially available dog foods that can help you establish a proper diet for your dog. But what about human food for dogs? What are dog owners’ choices if they cannot or do not want to feed their pet with commercially available dried, frozen or canned foods?
A number of human foods are perfect for dogs but there are also foods dogs shall never eat.
Whether you want to reward your pet with a delicious bite from your dinner or you have to occasionally substitute a meal with something from the fridge, make sure you are absolutely familiar with which human food for dogs is safe, nutritious, and tasty.
The following tips and advice will help you figure out which human food products are safe and healthy for your dog, which table scraps and snacks make perfect dog treats and how to plan a home-cooked diet for your pet.
What Human Food Can Dogs Eat?
After the long list of foods that household dogs must not eat, you may be wondering what human food dogs can eat.
The good news is that there are plenty of products that are healthy and perfectly safe for your pet. Of course, provided that these foods are prepared correctly. First, let’s see which the human foods dogs can eat:
1. Meat
Source: unsplash.com
Canine animals are carnivores and that is why meat is an essential part of a healthy and balanced diet. Lean meat, poultry, and fish are fine choices for your pet’s diet, as long as you follow these simple guidelines:
Any meat, poultry or fish meals you serve your dog are always cooked and de-boned.
Feed your pet with really lean cuts and always skin poultry.
Avoid feeding your pet with any processed meat products such as salami, ham, bacon, and so on. Chilly, spicy or salty meat products or meals should also be avoided.
Avoid feeding your dog with old, moldy or spoiled meat.
Always cut meat into easy-to-eat bites.
2. Whole grains
Source: unsplash.com
Just like humans, dogs can benefit from a diet that is rich in whole grains. Whole grains contain a variety of essential nutrients (important vitamins and minerals; fibers; high amounts of proteins, low amounts of fats) and can reduce the risk of certain health problems in dogs.
Additionally, whole grains are an excellent energy source – they will provide your dog with a lot of energy without causing spiking blood sugar levels. Here are some suitable whole-grain human foods you may consider for your pet:
Rice and brown rice, in particular, is one of the safest human foods your dog can eat. Brown rice contains vitamin B3 and microelements such as manganese, magnesium, and selenium. Additionally, it is an excellent source of fiber. Of course, the rice should be served cooked, without any added sugar, salt or spices.
Another excellent whole-grain human food that dogs can eat. Oats are one of the most nutritious options for pets – they contain a lot of proteins and carbohydrates as well as numerous essential ingredients that promote cardiovascular and immune system health. Remember to feed your pet with plain cooked oatmeal only.
Pasta and bread. Wheat or corn pasta and bread are human foods that dogs can eat safely. Once again, do not feed your dog with salted or spicy pasta and breadstick to plain, simple products.
2. Dairy products
Source: unsplash.com
Milk, yogurt, and cheese are a great addition to your dog’s diet as they contain lots of vitamins and minerals, essential for your dog’s health. On the other hand, not all dogs tolerate dairy products:
Most vets recommend milk to pups and young dogs only. The reason is that adult dogs, like humans, might be sensitive to the enzyme lactose – an enzyme that is found in all common dairy products. Dogs that are sensitive to lactose may suffer from upset stomach, diarrhea, or vomiting when fed milk as milk contains the highest concentration of lactose compared to all common dairy products. So, is milk among the human foods that dogs can eat? Yes, as long as your pet has no problems digesting it.
Most cheeses, including cottage cheese and cream cheese, are acceptable for dogs provided that they are given in small quantities and do not constitute the basic meal for your dog. If you want to reward your pet with something tasty, look for low-sodium, low-fat cheeses.
By far, this is the number one human dairy product that is safe and healthy for dogs. Of all dairy products, yogurt contains the least amount of lactose, so it’s suitable even for lactose intolerant pets. Organic, low-fat yogurt, without added sweeteners, is a perfect little snack for any dog.
3. Fruits
Source: unsplash.com
If you want to give your dog a tasty sweet bite, go for one of the dog-approved fruits: apple pears, bananas, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, melons, watermelons, kiwis, pumpkin, and so on. The only fruits that dogs cannot eat are persimmons, grapes, raisins, currants, and avocado.
Although fruits offer a great number of health benefits, be moderate in the portions you feed your dog: an inch of apple or pear slice, banana, watermelon or melon wedge, 2-3 berries, 1 strawberry, a slice of kiwi and orange are enough for a special treat without causing an upset stomach. Plus, always remove any peels, seeds, and/or pits as some are known to be toxic for dogs.
4. Vegetables
Source: unsplash.com
With some exceptions (onions, garlic, mushrooms, Rhubarb leaves) vegetables are not only human food dogs can eat but recommended ingredients for household dogs’. The most suitable vegetables for dogs are potatoes (roasted or boiled), broccoli and Brussels sprouts (steamed or prepared in a microwave), baby carrots (raw or boiled), and cucumbers (raw or boiled), beans (cooked green beans, black beans, peas).
Like fruits, vegetables must be cleaned, peeled, and de-seeded before being offered to your dog. Again, serve moderate portions – 1-2 tablespoons or bite-size pieces are enough.
5. Nuts
Source: unsplash.com
After we have covered the larger food groups, it is time to say a word or two about nuts. Are nuts safe for pets? Can you give your dog nut and/or nuts-derived products? Asked these questions many vets or dog nutritionists will simply ask “Why do you want to give nuts to your pet?”
In fact, that is a good question to consider if you are wondering whether or not to give nuts to your pooch – nuts cannot and must not be the main part of your pet’s diet and that makes them only suitable for occasional rewards. In general, dogs can eat nuts, although some dogs may have trouble processing and digesting nuts.
The only nuts that are truly toxic to dogs and must be avoided are macadamia nuts – even a small amount can cause serious neurological problems such as seizures, tremors, dizziness, or temporary paralysis.
Walnuts, peanuts, pistachios, almonds, cashews, and sunflower seeds are all suitable for dogs but in moderate amounts, as they are extremely rich in fats and may easily cause indigestion in dogs. If you are eager to give nuts to your pet, make sure that they are raw and unsalted, and that you have removed any shells.
To make it easier for yourself, it would be a good idea for you to check out this article on making dog food at home to get you started.
Having said all of the above, it is important to mention that dog owners should not only focus on what human foods can dogs eat, but need to consider another more important issue. What the primary nutrition source of their pet will be?
In other words, every dog owner should decide whether they will feed their dog human food full time, occasionally, or use certain products as rewards every now and than.
How to Create a Balanced Diet Using Human Foods That Dogs Can Eat?
Most vets suggest that only 5-10% of household dogs’ diet should consist of human food; the rest should be commercially available dry, canned or frozen dog foods. Then again, many dog owners prefer to cook for their pets and avoid processed pet foods as much as possible. Which is the best option?
Clearly, both options are acceptable as long as you can provide a well-balanced diet rich in all essential nutrients your pet needs to be healthy. The following tips will help you create a balanced and complete diet for your dog using human foods:
1. Balance the three basic nutrients
Source: unsplash.com
Every meal you prepare should include the right balance of the three essential nutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fat. Carbohydrates come from whole grains and vegetables, proteins, and fat – from meat. A dog’s meal should consist of about 50% proteins, preferably lean meat, fish, or poultry, and about 5% of fat.
The rest can be a mix of whole grains and vegetables. The best protein sources include beef (ground or cubed), skinless and boneless turkey and chicken, lamb, fish, and eggs (in moderation). Carbohydrates are the main energy source for dogs. Whole grains are an excellent source of energy, and brown rice and oatmeal are two of the best choices.
Although excess fat is harmful to dogs as it leads to obesity and other health problems, a totally fat-free diet is also not recommended. Lean cuts of meat and a little bit of vegetable oil should provide your canine friend with all the fat they need.
2. Create a variety
Every home-cooked meal for your pet should not only be balanced but should contain a variety of different ingredients. The reason is that certain vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids are only present in some types of foods.
Feeding your pet with the same food over a long period of time actually creates a very unbalanced diet. For example, instead of feeding your canine friend with chicken and brown rice every day, add extra ingredients such as fish or quinoa.
3. Additional supplements
Source: unsplash.com
Commercially available dog foods contain all required vitamins and minerals, so additional supplementation is rarely needed. Then again, a home-cooked diet may lack certain vitamins, minerals, and essential oils, so some supplements may be necessary.
The age and general health of your dog are also important when deciding whether what type and how much supplementation is necessary. Home-cooked dogs’ diets usually lack Calcium, Vitamin D, and E so usually there are the supplements household dogs receive daily.
In any case, it is recommended to consult a vet regarding the correct amount and type of supplementation your pet may need.
4. Stick to tested recipes
First-time dog owners and anyone who feels uncertain about creating a well-balanced and varied home-cooked diet for their pet should stick to proven and tested dog food recipes. Another option is to consult a dog nutrition specialist or even ask them to create recipes specifically for your dog.
And please avoid the common mistakes that many pet owners make, which are laid on in this article on 5 common errors of dog nutrition.
What Table Scraps Can Dogs Eat?
Source: unsplash.com
Most dogs enjoy receiving little tasty bites from your lunch and dinner. Most dog owners enjoy rewarding their pets with table scraps too.
However, have you ever considered how safe are these leftovers for your dog? Human food leftovers can make wonderful dog treats but must not be used as a main source of nutrition.
In addition, not all leftovers are safe for your dog. The following guidelines will help you decide what table scraps can your dog eat and how much leftovers should be included in your dog’s diet:
1. Dog-approved table scraps
Pet-friendly foods you can share with your four paw friend include boiled or steamed vegetables (without onion and garlic), plain pasta (without sauce), low-fat cheese, including cream cheese, roasted lean meat, fish, or skinless poultry, hard-boiled, scrambled or poached eggs, fruits.
Stay away from table scraps that you consider tasty but are dangerous for your dog’s health – your dog will prefer a piece of beef roast much more than a bar of chocolate!
2. Moderate amount of table scrap treats
Source: unsplash.com
Treats, commercially available, special home-cooked bites, or table scraps, must not constitute the main part of your dog’s diet. In fact, you should keep dog treats to a minimum not only to maintain your dog’s diet balanced, but because treats are an essential component in training – offering your dog treats often and with no reason can easily spoil him or her.
If you really want to reward your dog with a bite from your lunch or dinner, be very careful what you are giving your dog (is it red meat, bread, vegetables, etc) and how much is it so that you can adjust your dog’s diet accordingly.
3. Table scraps don’ts
Feeding your dog with home-cooked meals is very different than rewarding him or her with table scraps. The main difference is in the ingredients and the way food was prepared: human recipes typically contain an excess of salt, black pepper, and various other spices, and our favorite foods are often fried.
As you can see, your lunch or dinner might not be entirely suitable for your canine friend – avoid salty and/or spicy foods, anything that contains too much sugar or fat, as well as any food products that are known to be potentially toxic for dogs (raisins, grapes, onion, garlic, avocado, fruit pits, and seeds, etc).
4. Avoid junk food
Junk food is not necessarily good for humans but it can be really harmful to dogs.
Pizza leftovers, French fries, potato chips, candies, chocolate bonbons, and other similar bites are not suitable for your dog.
5. Share human food correctly
When planning to use table scraps as dog treats, what human food can your dog eat becomes only half of the issue. Regardless of the type and amount of food you are going to share with your pet, you should know how to do this correctly.
The general rule is not to feed your dog straight from the table and not during meal times. Failing to observe these simple rules will certainly ruin your dog’s discipline and turn him or her into a beggar.
People have been feeding their canine friends with table leftovers for decades.
Nowadays, opinions regarding human food for dogs vary drastically – some vets and nutrition specialists totally deny the benefits of home-cooked human food for dogs, others consider occasional treats to be OK, and third believe that an organic, home-cooked diet is better than any commercially available dog food formula.
However, that isn’t to say that there aren’t some brands that are paving the way in healthy dog nutrition. Please read this article on the top 10 healthiest dog food brands.
Clearly, tossing everything that’s left on the table after lunch or dinner in your dog’s bowl is not a good idea – some food products are safe for people but toxic to dogs.
The good news is that a large number of the ingredients that constitute your diet are perfectly safe and healthy for your canine friend.
So, if you are interested in cooking for your dog or in rewarding him or her with a tasty bite from the table, make sure you stick to pet-friendly human foods, prepared in a way that’s safe and healthy for your pet.
There are many pet owners who still believe that feeding cooked bones to their dogs is completely fine. They also believe that cooked bones are natural and healthy and that dogs simply love chewing on them.
It is true that a dog will most likely chew on a cooked bone, but that does not mean that it is healthy or safe for him.
However, cooked bones are unsafe no matter what their size or origin, and they can not only hurt your dog’s internal organs but also lead him to experience an agonizing death.
There are some vets that believe that raw bones are unsafe too, and this article will provide you with some of the facts related to the consequences of feeding cooked bones to your pets and the benefits of switching to raw bones.
The Consequences of Feeding Cooked Bones
If you have been wondering whether dogs can eat cooked bones, then you should know that yes, they can, but they certainly should not.
Be sure to read our article on whether can dogs eat raw meat VS home-cooked meat.
That is because cooked bones have no nutritional value and they are dangerous because they can splinter and pierce your pet’s internal organs which can lead to death.
When you cook a bone, its structure changes, which makes it become indigestible and breakable. There is not even one benefit of feeding cooked bones to your dog.
That means that the dog can just harm himself by trying to chew on the bone that can potentially kill him. Some of the consequences of feeding cooked bones to dogs are:
Your dog can easily break his teeth by trying to stubbornly chew on a cooked bone. That is understandable, especially if a dog is hungry and his owner provided him only with cooked bones, thinking foolishly that cooked bones are enough. This means that your dog may have to go through some expensive dentistry at the vet.
The dog can also get his tongue or mouth pierced by a splintered cooked bone, which will mean that a trip to the vet is a must, not to mention how painful it can be.
A cooked bone can get stuck in a dog’s lower jaw and not only frighten him but also injury him.
Another possibility is that a bone can get stuck in windpipe, which can happen if a dog somehow inhales a very small piece of bone and it can lead to him being unable to breathe normally.
A cooked bone can get stuck in esophagus, which is the tube that food goes through in order to reach the stomach. This may cause gagging and surgery.
A bone can get stuck in stomach, which means that the bone is too big and it gets stuck before going into the intestines. This means that your dog will need a surgery or upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Your dog gets a cooked bone stuck in intestines which causes a blockage and it will certainly lead to a surgery.
Bone fragments cause constipation because they are probably too sharp and they scrape the insides of rectum or the large intestine as they move along. This is, as you can imagine, very painful and it will require a visit to the vet.
Peritonitis is a very difficult bacterial infection of the abdomen and they appear when small bone fragments poke holes in a dog’s stomach or intestines. It can be fatal and it is usually difficult to treat, so your dog must be taken to a vet.
Bones can cause severe bleeding from the rectum or even internal bleeding as they pierce the internal organs.
If Your Dog Has Already Eaten a Cooked Bone
If your dog has somehow got a hold of a cooked chicken carcass or any other cooked bone, before you start to panic, and before you rush your mischievous pet to the vet, there are some things that you should be aware of.
First, you should check out your dog’s behavior. If he starts gagging, vomiting, drinking water excessively, licking his lips, coughing, pacing anxiously or he cannot sit, then that means that a piece of a cooked bone has been stuck in his throat or it is causing pain in his stomach. In this case you should know that taking your dog to the vet is a must.
However, if your furry friend has already eaten a cooked bone, ingested it and shows no signs of choking, coughing or experiencing any kind of pain, then it is possible that he will be just fine.
Nevertheless, it is very important that you monitor his behavior during the next couple of days. That means that you should make sure to see if he is able to pass the bone through his stool or that he is not bleeding from his rectum.
Another signs that you should be aware of are: difficulty defecating, stomach swelling, vomiting, nervousness or anxious behavior.
If your pooch shows any of these symptoms during the next 12 to 48 hours, then you should immediately seek the medical attention; or if there are no signs of bone fragments in his stool after 72 hours, you should go to the vet too.
Visits to the vets or hospitalization can be pricey, so check out our piece on dog health insurance to help you.
After everything is over, you should remember that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure and that means that you should keep a better eye on your furry friend, so he does not get into trouble by eating something that he should not.
Cooked Bones VS Raw Bones
Unlike cooked bones, which have already mentioned above as being very dangerous, raw bones have been a part of dogs’ diets for a very long time and probably from the very beginning.
Today’s dogs that are kept as pets share the same characteristics of their predecessors, and even though humans have modified various dog breeds to their liking, the basic nutrient requirements are the same.
However, a ground raw bone is a good source of calcium and phosphorus, having in mind that 70 % of the bone is minerals and only 30 % is composed of poorly digested collagen. Additionally, a raw ground bone does not present any risk whatsoever to the dog’s digestive track, while there is a risk if you feed a whole raw bone.
There are helpful articles about raw dog food recipes you should check out.
The risk of infection from pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli is another possible risk, especially if you do not know the source of the meat and bones you purchased. There are some food that are not suited to feed your dog, find out what these are in our previous article.
There are two types of raw bones: edible and recreational. The edible ones are the hollow and non weight-bearing bones of birds (chicken wings and chicken and turkey necks). They are good because they can be crushed in a meat grinder and they do not have marrow.
However, if you do not ground them, they can be dangerous because of their sharpness. The recreational ones are the raw bones of beef or bison and they are good because they provide your dog with mental and dental exercises and reduce the risks of developing gum diseases. They do not have any special nutrients, but they are not breakable as cooked bones, and that means that they can be used as playthings.
However, they should not be too hard, because if a dog is gnawing at them too much, he can also hurt his mouth. All in all, feeding a ground raw bone seems to be the best and healthiest choice, and even though feeding a whole raw bone is risky, it is still a better choice than giving a cooked bone to your dog. Are you feeding your dog enough? See our piece on the appropriate food to give your pet to help you make good choices.
A Guideline to Feeding Raw Bones
First of all, you should determine whether feeding raw bones to your dog is appropriate at all. That is because certain dog breeds cannot process bones at all and they are unable to gain the same benefits from them as the others.
That is mostly because of their jaw bone structure and these dog breeds are called brachiocephalic and some of them are: Boxers, Bulldogs, Pugs, and Shih Tzu.
These breeds have delicate jaw bone structures and softer teeth, so they are unable to eat raw bones. You can also ask your vet to evaluate their upper and lower molars, the length of the muzzle to see if the mouth is in shape of handling a bone.
It also depends on your dog’s medical history in general – if he is not used to bones he may have problems with diarrhea or soft stool. Their bodies need time adjusting to raw bones, the same as with raw meat. Secondly, as with the treats, you should never give raw bones before or during the full meal.
The dog should never be starving when he is eating a bone, because he may start gnawing at it aggressively or trying to gulp it all at once. Also, big dog breeds such as Labradors, Shepherds, or Dobermans should not eat cut or smaller bones because they would swallow them quickly. Bones should always be longer or larger than the length of the muzzle.
Another important thing is that you should always supervise and monitor your dog’s behavior during and after eating the bone. Do not give your dog a bone and then leave for work, for example. After the dog is finished, you must always check his mouth, teeth and gums so you can make sure there is no injury or bleeding.
Tips for Feeding Bones in General
Raw bones are safer than cooked bones, but you should still avoid the large ones from sheep and cows since they are the hardest and densest.
The safest raw bones are raw or frozen chicken thighs, wings or backs. They are the softest ones, and you should avoid the hardest, even if they are raw.
If you have a dog who is a gulper and not a chewer, then you should avoid giving him any bone, raw or not. It is just too risky.
Some dog breeds (which are mentioned above) are not physically able to chew or eat bones, so they should not be given any.
You can get raw bones from the supermarket or your butcher, so he or she can provide you with the best and softest cuts, because they know they are for your dogs.
Always make sure to check on your pet as he is chewing the bone and after he is finished. Also do not forget to check his teeth and gum, especially if he is not used to raw bones yet.
Chicken wings and chicken and turkey necks are better grounded, because they can be very sharp and dangerous to larger dog breeds. Also, they do not have marrow so they make a great choice for your dog.
Do not feed your dog a cut or small bone, because they can be swallowed whole so they pose a risk of choking. A bone should be longer than a dog’s muzzle.
The best alternative to raw bones is an edible dental bone of high quality.
To sum up, we mentioned in the article the consequences of feeding cooked bones to the dogs and came to the conclusion that there is not even one benefit of such bones.
Furthermore, they can be very dangerous because cooked bones are bristle, sharp and easily breakable which can lead to your dog choking or gagging on them. The sharp or broken ends of such bones can also pierce your pet’s internal organs and end up being fatal.
We also mentioned a difference between cooked and raw bones, and pointed out some benefits of grounded and whole raw bones. However, the most important thing is to remember that you should always monitor your dog during and after the eating so you can notice in time if he shows any signs of pain or discomfort.
Your dog depends on you to give him the healthiest food possible and ensure his safety by giving him the appropriate portions and nutrients. For the best dog bones for your pet, see our article on the subject.
Did you know that veterinary surveys consistently show more than half of pet dogs are overweight in many countries? Even more surprising, many owners do not realize it until health problems appear.
Extra weight does not arrive overnight, and it rarely comes from one single mistake. It builds slowly through habits that feel normal and even loving.
That is why dog weight gain deserves calm attention rather than guilt or panic.
If you have ever wondered whether your dog is getting a little heavier, or questioned if an extra treat really matters, you are not alone.
This article looks closely at how weight gain happens, why it matters, and what practical steps actually work.
The goal is not perfection, but awareness and steady improvement that supports a long, active life for your dog.
What dog weight gain really means
Source: thedodo.com
Dog weight gain is not just about a number on the scale. It reflects a shift in body composition where fat increases faster than muscle and bone support can handle.
This matters because dogs are built for movement, and extra weight changes how their joints, heart, and metabolism function.
Veterinarians usually assess weight using a body condition score rather than scale weight alone.
You should be able to feel ribs without pressing hard, see a visible waist from above, and notice a slight abdominal tuck from the side.
When these signs disappear, weight gain is already underway.
Important definition: Canine obesity is typically defined as body weight that is 20 percent or more above a dog’s ideal weight, not just a visual impression.
Understanding this early helps prevent slow, unnoticed progression that becomes harder to reverse later.
Dietary choices and hidden calorie sources
Food is the most common contributor to dog weight gain, but the issue is rarely just portion size. Calorie density, ingredient quality, and feeding consistency all matter.
Many dogs eat more energy than they can burn, even when portions look reasonable.
One overlooked factor is food sensitivity and digestion. Dogs that struggle with certain ingredients may experience inflammation or poor nutrient use, leading owners to feed more than necessary.
Choosing a hypoallergenic diet can support better digestion and nutrient absorption for sensitive dogs, helping meals work more efficiently rather than simply increasing volume.
Some owners explore carefully formulated options like this hypoallergenic adult dog food as part of a balanced feeding plan.
Common hidden calorie sources include:
Frequent training treats without meal adjustment
Table scraps offered “just this once”
Multiple family members feeding separately
High-fat chews used daily
Calories add up quietly when these habits overlap.
Lifestyle and activity changes that add weight
Source: dogmotive.com
Dogs do not become overweight only because of food. Lifestyle plays a major role. Reduced activity is one of the fastest ways to trigger weight gain, especially when feeding habits stay the same.
Modern routines often limit natural movement. Short walks replace long outdoor play, and mental stimulation substitutes for physical exercise. Age also matters.
As dogs mature, metabolism slows and muscle mass decreases unless activity is maintained.
A helpful way to evaluate lifestyle impact is to compare energy input versus output.
Daily factor
High risk pattern
Healthier adjustment
Walk duration
Under 20 minutes
40 to 60 minutes total
Play intensity
Low or none
Structured active play
Mental work
Food rewards only
Puzzle toys plus movement
Small activity increases can significantly offset calorie intake when done consistently.
Breed, age, and hormonal influences
Some dogs are biologically more prone to weight gain than others. Breed genetics influence appetite regulation, fat storage, and energy use.
Labradors, Beagles, and certain toy breeds often gain weight more easily, even with moderate feeding.
Age introduces another layer. Puppies burn energy rapidly, but adult dogs require careful calorie adjustments.
Senior dogs need fewer calories but still require high-quality protein to preserve muscle. Hormonal changes also matter.
Neutered and spayed dogs often experience reduced metabolic rate, which means previous feeding amounts may become excessive.
Did you know? Studies show that neutered dogs may need up to 25 percent fewer calories than intact dogs of the same size and activity level.
This does not mean weight gain is inevitable, but it does require proactive feeding adjustments.
Health risks associated with excess weight
Dog weight gain is not a cosmetic issue. It is a medical concern with clear links to reduced lifespan and quality of life.
Extra fat tissue acts like an endocrine organ, producing inflammatory compounds that affect the entire body.
Common health risks include joint strain, reduced mobility, and early arthritis.
Overweight dogs are also more likely to develop insulin resistance, breathing difficulty, and heart strain.
Even routine activities such as climbing stairs or jumping into a car can become painful.
A lesser-known consequence is immune system stress. Chronic inflammation associated with excess fat can weaken immune responses, making recovery from illness slower.
These risks compound over time, which is why early prevention is far easier than treatment after complications appear.
How to recognize early warning signs at home
Source: houndsy.com
Many owners miss the early signs of weight gain because changes are gradual. Regular observation makes a difference. Feeling your dog’s body monthly is more reliable than visual checks alone, especially for long-coated breeds.
Watch for subtle changes such as slower movement, reluctance to jump, or heavier breathing after mild exercise.
Collars that tighten without size changes can also signal gradual gain.
A simple home check includes:
Run hands along the ribcage to assess fat coverage
Observe waist shape from above after grooming
Monitor stamina during normal walks
If any changes appear, adjusting habits early can prevent the need for strict weight loss programs later.
Practical prevention strategies that actually work
Preventing dog weight gain does not require extreme restrictions. Consistency matters more than perfection. Feeding measured portions, not estimated scoops, is one of the most effective steps.
Treats should be planned, not spontaneous. If treats are used for training, reduce meal portions slightly to compensate.
Choosing lower-calorie rewards or using part of the regular meal for training can also help.
A balanced prevention approach often includes:
Scheduled feeding times rather than free feeding
Regular weigh-ins every one to two months
Daily activity goals matched to age and breed
These habits protect against gradual gain without reducing enjoyment or bonding.
When weight gain signals an underlying problem
Sometimes dog weight gain is not caused by lifestyle alone. Certain medical conditions can contribute, including hypothyroidism and Cushing’s disease. These conditions alter metabolism and hormone balance, making weight management difficult even with controlled feeding.
Warning signs that suggest a veterinary check is needed include sudden weight gain without diet change, lethargy, hair thinning, or increased thirst. Blood tests can rule out or confirm underlying issues.
Key reminder: Weight gain combined with behavioral or coat changes should always be evaluated medically, not managed through diet alone.
Addressing the root cause ensures that weight management efforts are safe and effective.
Long-term weight management and quality of life
Source: wisdompanel.com
Healthy weight maintenance is not a short-term project. It is a long-term commitment that evolves as your dog ages. Feeding plans and activity levels should be reviewed at least once a year, ideally during routine veterinary visits.
Dogs at a healthy weight tend to stay active longer, recover faster from injury, and show more enthusiasm for play. Owners often notice improved mood and engagement once excess weight is reduced or prevented.
The goal is not thinness, but balance. A dog that moves comfortably, breathes easily, and enjoys daily activity is a dog whose needs are being met.
Taking a thoughtful, informed approach to dog weight gain protects not just physical health, but the everyday joy dogs bring into our lives.
I’m going to walk you through a simple, practical example. Let’s say you’re trying to train a dog.
You’ve got a dog and you want it to behave like a dog. If the dog will only do what you tell it, how would you go about doing that?
…or maybe this is not your dog (this is mine). He’s a very excited puppy in training. He wants to play so I have him on his leash and he jumps up on the couch and then runs away in the other direction.
I am walking him back but he doesn’t want me there at all. Is this all just some kind of mistake or am I doing something wrong?
…or maybe this is not my dog (this is my friend’s). He just loves playing with his ball, so I let him chase it around the floor until it rolls under the sofa where he lays down, panting contentedly for a couple of minutes!
I am walking him back but he doesn’t want me there at all. Is this all just some kind of mistake or am I doing something wrong?
If you are trying to train your own dog, one thing which stands out as really obvious is that there is one obvious thing that works every time: use leashes.
If you are walking your dog using your hand or even using a leash, then things will work out much better for both of you than if you were just trying to obey commands and use words instead.
That said, there are many other ways to help your pet learn what they need and what they don’t need; we cover them here as well (also in Part 2 ).
Why Does My Dog Pull Me When I Go For a Walk?
Source: unsplash.com
Dogs are pack creatures like wolfs are. They have a hierarchy in their pack. The fact that your dog is pulling it is believed that it is an attempt to be a leader of his pack.
If your canine is well behaved and obedient at your home that means he is not the alpha dog and he will not pull as soon as you go out of the house.
Accidental Rewards
Your dog pulls and you have no control. He is getting where he wants to go. So he will keep pulling since there is no one to stop him.
Even when you unleash your dog either because your hands are in pain or you might be afraid that he is hurt then this is the best reward for him.
Your dog learns that pulling pays off and he can go whenever directions he wants to go.
Dog Training Basics
Source: figopetinsurance.com
Every dog knows that when you stand in front of it, it has to follow you. Every dog knows that when you turn your head, it has to turn too. Every dog knows that if you ask it to sit, it has to sit. It is a basic part of every dog’s life.
It’s also part of ours. In the last couple of decades, there have been a lot of developments in canine training and behavior modification techniques — some good, some bad — but we’ve reached a point where the most successful techniques are still based on behaviors ingrained in our dogs decades ago (principally Sit and Down).
So, I thought I would write up a handy guide for anyone who is interested in making their own training program but doesn’t have a lot of money or time on their hands. It boils down to this:
Become familiar with the dog and its natural tendencies
Understand what motivates the dog and how to reach that motivation
Know what behaviors are effective with your pet
Figure out what behavior you want your pet to show (and why)
Identify which exercises will work best for your pet (and why).
How to Leash Train a Puppy
Source: akc.org
If we understand how a dog learns, we can use this knowledge to train dogs for specific jobs.
First, you have to teach your dog what he is supposed to do. Once he knows that, you have to reinforce the behavior with food or treats. Doing this often enough will keep his mind on what he is supposed to do – which makes it much easier for him to learn new behaviors (like walking on a leash).
The next step is more difficult. You want to train your puppy so that she will perform well in every situation, but she might not think of every situation as an opportunity for performance.
It’s important not to let her feel like she has done something wrong if she misses an opportunity for performance: if she does something wrong, don’t punish her; instead, reward her for doing the right thing.
Why You Should Leash Train Your Dog
Source: thegoodypet.com
From the dog’s point of view, a dog is a machine. It is also, most importantly, its owner. Every day — every motion it makes — it has to make decisions about whether to go here or there or do what its owner wants it to do. It must also decide about how long before it will look for its next meal and how much the journey will cost.
This is why we advocate leash training as the best way to teach your dog (or any other pet) to be a good, well-behaved member of society.
Leash training isn’t just for dogs anymore: I would argue that almost all species should be trained in this way too by somebody with a bit of basic training experience (more on that in a later post). And pets are no exception; even kids need to be taught some basic rules and manners from time to time.
To do this you need to get your best friend (in our case, my dog Scooby) used to you first so that he knows you are there for him whenever he needs it (aka when your phone rings or when someone knocks at the door).
You need him used to you also being able to leave him alone even if he’s not fully awake yet because otherwise, he will start trying hard not to show signs of worry or something like that while he’s still in pain or maybe just tired from being up all night with me (which of course can happen at any time too since we live in Canada;)).
But if the only thing that matters is “me” then there really is no point in having a furry friend at all (if other people who love him are going away on vacation and they won’t be able to spend much time with him without worry).
Tips for Successful Leash Training

It’s not easy to leash train a dog, and it is even harder to keep it from escaping. The first step is to find the right person for the job. That’s why we put ourselves through a rigorous selection process, including thorough testing at our canine-friendly test facility. Our tests include:
Normally, dogs will leave their owners’ side when they’re hungry or thirsty, and that’s an attractive prospect for new owners—but if only one condition is met, then your dog likely won’t follow you anywhere else. To trick your dog into following you from place to place, you need to satisfy two key conditions:
We’ve found that the most effective method for making sure your dog follows you anywhere is to convince him that he needs to be somewhere else first. Dogs aren’t stupid; they use all of their senses—sight, hearing, and smell—to determine where they are in relation to other objects in the environment, including people and other pets.
So when your dog sees you coming or hears a familiar voice calling his name or commanding him forward (such as “come here now”), he’ll probably follow. But what if your dog doesn’t come running when someone calls his name? That’s where we come in: We teach our dogs that walking ahead of us requires them to be somewhere else first.
Learn How To Walk On a Loose Leash
Source: unsplash.com
1. Start-Stop
This training step is straightforward. Whenever your dog pulls then you stop moving. The next step is to call him to come to you and have him sit next to you. Give praise and reward with a treat. Then start to walk again and when he walks nicely continue rewarding him with more treats.
Stop when he pulls again. Repeat until your dog understands that pulling does not get him anywhere. Very soon your dog will realize that he gets treats when he is walking nicely next to you.
During training naturally, your dog wants to sniff. As soon as he is going for a specific object stop and call him to come and give him the sit command. This time don’t reward the dog just walk with him towards the object and let him sniff. The object is the reward.
2. Magic Treats
Source: unsplash.com
There is an alternative way to teach your dog to walk on a loose leash. Take with you a lot of treats. If you have a treat bag that can be attached to your belt then use it.
Grab some treats in your hand and keep your hand closed in front of your dog’s nose. Let him sniff the treats. Every some second give a treat. Naturally, he will follow your hand.
But if he starts to pull, stop walking. As aforementioned call your dog to come and ask him to sit. When sited praise and continue to walk by holding the treats in front of him.
When you see some improvement then try the same exercise with offering fewer treats until your dog can walk without reward. Normally the dog will stop pulling. Each dog can have a different progressive time.
3. Turn back method
Source: unsplash.com
This method can be related to negative reinforcement. However, this ‘punishment’ is small and most importantly is not severe.
Attention! Don’t use this training technique if your dog is wearing a head halter or slip lead. Whenever he is reaching the end of the leash make a warning cue or say a command as ‘hey’ or ‘wait’.
If the cue or command is successful, then praise and treat. Otherwise, turn around and walk in the opposite direction. Use your hand and tug slightly on your dog’s collar or harness. When the dog catches up rewarded with praise and a treat. Repeat.
The result should be that your dog understands that pulling the leash leads in another direction and at the same time he feels an unpleasant sensation.
Use this method only if the positive reinforcement training is not effective and try something else in case your dog shows any signs of fear or pain, yelping e.t.c.
4. Tug The Collar
Source: unsplash.com
Attention: This method also uses a kind of negative reinforcement.
As aforementioned don’t use this method in case your dog is wearing a slip lead or head halter. And lastly use only if positive reinforcement does not work for your dog.
Like previously when the dog is getting closer to the end of the leash tug quickly toward you, but not pull. The force you are using depends mostly on the dog’s size.
The dog will feel unpleasant and hopefully should correct your dog’s behavior in a short period of time.
Caution: Tugging hard can cause injuries to your dog’s neck. Especially with smaller breeds be extra careful.
5. Choose the Right Collar
Source: unsplash.com
There are many kinds of collars to choose from. Making the best choice can contribute positively as you teach your dog to walk nicely.
Classic Collar
Most dog owners choose this kind of collar since you can leave it on your dog all the time. It’s a good choice and it’s also comfortable for your canine.
Harnesses choice
If you have a difficult time walking your dog with a collar then a harness could be a better choice for you. Choosing Head haltes and no-pull harnesses can be very helpful during the training period.
You have more control over the dog plus the dog is discouraged from pulling. It is better to use a nonpull harness when you are not in training with your dog. Like going to the dog park.
If you want your dog to walk with a loose leash next to you then use a normal collar during training sessions.
6. Leash choice
Source: unsplash.com
Not based on color but on quality. Big breeds can snap the leash and run away. Chose a sturdy one around 5-6 inches long so that your dog has enough length to move freely and at the same short enough so that you can reach him for treats and praises.
Things you should avoid is negative reinforcement because it can be effective only if is used carefully and in an infrequent manner.
Using choke and prong collars can hurt your dog since it is hard to control the amount of force delivered to the neck. So please avoid them.
Four types of training are typically undertaken with this technique:
We call these four types of training “weathering” because they’re applied equally across all weather conditions—whether it’s rain or snow on a sunny day; windy weather on a calm day; foggy weather on a clear day; or sleet (or snow) on a cold night.
Once we’ve taught our dogs that if they don’t come running when called by another person or animal (usually us), then something needs to be done about it before the weather turns bad again… We need them out in front so we can see what they’re doing!
For example: If I call my dog over from behind me so I can lead him into camp for dinner, he has no idea I’m teaching him how not-to-run! He’ll still run pretty much every time I call his name…
But once he understands that he needs to be somewhere else before I call his name again, then he’ll happily follow me wherever I go… So long as we keep reinforcing this behavior so he believes that something needs to happen before he runs off again like last time!
Conclusion
This is one of the best post-promotion tips I have ever read. It’s something that many startups say next to nothing about:
In order to really make money, you need to “Leash” your dog.
What does this mean? How are you supposed to do it? (Try a leash on the beach and see what happens.) And how do you do it?
The answer is simple: You just need to be able to talk directly to your customers. You need to understand what they want and how they see their needs meeting up with yours.
Then, you need to tell them why they should buy from you instead of some other vendor or competitor. You need a great story that makes them laugh and feel delighted with the prospect of getting a great deal on their next purchase.
When it comes to dog selection, the decision that a potential dog owner is required to make should rely on imperative factors such as the time he or she will allocate to the dog. Other factors include the financial commitments required in nurturing a dog and the grooming requirements involved. Apart from the financial commitments involved, a potential dog owner is also expected to assess how the overall behavior of the dog is going to be.
The overall behavior of a dog can be assessed by looking at its behavior and attitude toward other pets and kids. All in all, when buying a dog, barking should not be the only factor that should play a key role in determining whether a certain dog or dog breed is ideal for you.
It is also very important to also understand that there are certain dog breeds that tend to bark more than others and then there are those breeds that seldom bark. There are those individuals who may prefer dog breeds that do not bark most of the time. Then, there are those people who will prefer dogs that bark from time to time especially individuals who are looking for ways to improve security at home.
Despite the fact that the level of barking may vary from one breed to another, it is also important to know that the personality and style of each dog will also play a big role.
Furthermore, most breeders and dog owners can also condition their pets to either bark more than others or less than others. The acclimatizing can either be voluntarily or as a result of various aspects such as overcrowding, lack of socialization or the dog owner’s personality.
Why Do Dogs Bark
Barking is one of the most distinctive features in dogs thus making them stand out from other animals especially in the canine family. Through barking, dogs are not only able to communicate with humans but they are also able to express themselves accordingly.
Though from time to time they may also use other forms such whining and growling like a form of communication. Needless to say, barking can also be used to warn humans especially if there is an intruder in the house or if there is any danger around the corner.
One the most common misguided misconception about barking is that most people tend to think dogs bark for revenge or spite. This concept is indeed very wrong. Hence, it is very important to understand that dogs only bark as a form of communication and not for any other anterior motive. All in all here are six reasons why dogs bark.
One of the main reasons that dogs may bark is to get the attention of the dog owner. More than often we tend to be carried away with other things that we even forget about the pets. May it be watching the television or completing various tasks in the house.
The good thing about the attention seeking bark is that once you hear it, you will immediately know what it means. Another reason dogs may bark is to either warn or alert you, the dog owner especially when someone is at the door or when a stranger passes close to your house.
Also, this type of bark can also be used to scare away strangers or potential intruders. The warning or alert bark is usually very different from all the other types of barks since its loud, sharp and authoritative in nature. The third reasons why dogs will bark is due to anxiety. When most dogs become anxious, they tend to bark so as to self-soothe themselves with a high pitched bark that is sometimes followed whining.
The final reason dogs may bark when they need to respond to other dogs. For any dog owner, the barking is unquestionably a familiar scenario, especially when all the dogs in the same neighborhood start to bark at the same time.
Dog Breeds That Don’t Bark
Despite the fact that they are not very common, non-barking dogs can be found in many countries and regions around the world. Many of these breeds are not common dogs, hence may not recognized by some Kennel clubs though they may still be recognized by other groups and organizations. It is very important to note that certain breeds such as the hounds and other common northern breeds may not bark from to time, but they still have their unique sounds.
1. The Basenji
The Basenji is undeniably one of the most widely recognized non-barking dogs and is currently recognized by many Kennel Clubs such as the Canadian Kennel Club, American Kennel Club and the Kennel Club of the UK. As one of the oldest dogs to be domesticated by man, the Basenji has its origins from Africa. All in all, this dog breed is highly decipherable especially due to its physical appearance and specific coat coloration.
Basenji dog breeds are usually a mixture of copper red with either brindle or black with significant white markings on the face, chest and the bases of the feet and legs. In terms of size, the Basenji is not very large when compared to other breeds and weighs about 20 to 25 kilograms after reaching maturity. The breed’s medium size is what makes this breed an ideal fit or candidate for apartments, small house living and also suitable for indoor exercises.
Irrespective of the breed’s inability to bark, the Basenji dog breeds are still able to make the different type of noises such as screeches, yodels, crows, and howls. Furthermore, others may also make sounds that are slightly similar to humming or singing which can be just as probing as the sounds produced by barking dogs. By producing any of the sounds discussed above, a Basenji will be able to signal as to whether it is in distress, excited, happy or interested.
Though just like barking the intensity will vary from one Basenji to another. Since this breed is not a downright non-barking dog, the Basenji breed will undeniably let out a bark once in a while, especially if there is another dog in the house that barks.
The New-guinea Singing Dog Breed
Apart from being a wild dog, the New-Guinea singing dog is also among the many dog breeds that are on the brink of becoming extinct if restorative measures are not taken as soon as possible.
Despite being on the verge of extinction, this dog breed is being selectively bred by some private breeders, kennels and zoos as a measure of preserving this highly unique wild dog breed. Currently, the New Guinea’s dog breed population in its native land, New Guinea, has significantly dropped over the last few years.
While the remaining few are being crossbred with other dog species to form hybrids. All in all, the New Guinea Dog Breed is a primitive dog breed that has proven from time to time that they can be hard to domesticate nor socialize with other animals or humans.
Unlike most dog breeds, the New Guinea breed is not very affectionate and dependent. Hence, they are not everyone’s cup of tea. Nonetheless, with proper training from a trainer or owner who truly understands this dog breed, they can be able to make very good pets.
Due to their primitive in nature, the New Guinea Singing Dog breeds are very effective hunters due to their exceptional prey instincts, drive, and enthusiasm. The breed’s hunting instinctive is what makes them not an ideal pet because they can end up killing other small sized pet that may be present in the house.
Since they prefer being alone most of the time, the New Guinea Singing Dogs are usually very aggressive towards other dogs, especially those of the same sex unless they have been raised together as puppies.
When it comes to vocalizations, the sounds that this primitive dog breed produces is unique thus making them one of the rarest breeds. Unlike other non-barking dogs that may either growl or howl, the New Guinea Breed produces a single note sound usually changes up and down a scale. The fluctuation of a sound note up and down a scale is commonly referred to as trilling.
When expressing happiness or dissatisfaction, this dog breed will either growl or produce musical rumbling. In terms of appearance, the New Guinea Singing Dog Breed has a thick medium length, the fur coat that are usually either be red, fawn or brown in color.
The dog’s head is slightly huge when compared to its body size while the legs are rather short and masculine which is one of the main reasons why many people say that this breed resembles a fox or wild Dingo.
Beagles
Unlike the NGSD dog breed, Beagles are a fun loving dog breed that makes them suitable companions for both kids and adults.
Originally, beagles were exclusively used as scent hounds especially due to their exceptional sense of smell. In countries like the United States and many others, Beagles are still used to track and hunt small game such as rabbits. All in all, the nose is one of the most important features of the beagle breed.
Hence, the breeds head will always be down on the ground while searching for new leads and scents. Furthermore, it is important to note that beagles have close to two hundred and twenty million scent receptors unlike the 5 million found in humans.
Nonetheless, since beagles are hounds, they can be very stubborn at times. Hence, they will require a little bit of patience and very creative training modus operandi, from an individual who has a profound knowledge and exceptional skills in handling and training this unique dog breed.
Despite the fact that they are categorized as non-barking dogs, Beagles are still one of the loudest dog breeds in the world. Instead of the traditional barking, Beagles are widely known for producing three distinctive vocalizations with baying, which is the production of long, deep-toned voices in continuous successions being the most common.
Baying is very common among hounds and is an ideal way to let hunters and other dogs where they are when hunting or tracking.
Apart from hunting, Beagles also bay when they are super excited or when they are warning the owner that a strange person is within the vicinity. Furthermore, beagles can also bay when greeting a member of the family or when they see other dogs around.
Currently, Beagles are mostly used in airports and customs departments to detect any illegal substances or contrabands that may be hidden by travelers.
Greyhound
Commonly regarded as the Ferrari of the canine family, the greyhound dog breed can reach top speeds of 40-50 miles per hour. It is this incredible speed and exceptional eyesight that has made greyhounds ideal for hunting and chasing animals such as deer, hares and foxes and also a perfect fit for animal racing. Apart from hunting and racing, greyhounds are also used in various sports such as conformation, agility, lure coursing and obedience.
All in all, the greyhound is one of the many ancient dog, dating back to 2900 B.C and has its origin in Egypt. Greyhounds are perceived to be the descendants of the Arabian Sloughi dog breed and were first brought to America in the 1500’s by Spanish explorers.
Another outstanding feature of the greyhound is their intelligence and their strong sense to one’s tone. By combining their intelligence and their strong sense of one’s tone, the greyhound may choose to either listen or not listen to the dog owner especially if they sense they are stronger minded than the dog owner.
Due to definitive prey drive, Greyhounds must be well trained before being exposed to other pets since they may end up killing them when left alone.
As non-barking dogs, the greyhound dog breed will rarely bark though they may bark when playing with other dogs or when warning the owner of an intruder or impending danger.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Just as its name indicates, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was one of King Charles’s dog breed hence it was named after him. Despite being born and bred as a companion, the Cavalier still has the heart and instincts of a Spaniel hence can be trained to hunt.
Apart from being elegant and royal, the Cavalier King Charles dog breed is slightly longer than tall with a medium-length silky coat that has a slight wave.
Due to their gentle and reserved nature the Cavalier King will undeniably fit into any lifestyle and will make great indoor pets. Despite its friendly nature, the Cavalier King breed can also be very stubborn at times.
Barking is never an issue with the Cavalier King because they are non-barking dogs though they may choose to bark from time to time. All in all, the Cavalier King loves the company and gets very well with people and other pets as well.
Borzoi
Just like the Saluki breed, the Borzoi dog breed is among the very few dog that possess that unique yet intriguing supermodel look down. Since it has exceptional speeds, the Borzoi is an ideal hunting dog just like the gray hound.
Nonetheless, the Borzoi dog breed is not a suitable watchdog because it usually ignores visitors. In some cases, it can also ignore the dog owner though all this will also depend on the individual characteristic of each dog.
In some cases, many dog enthusiasts have come to the conclusion that the Borzoi is not as intelligent as they initially thought it was because it does not listen to commands. This is not the case because, the Borzoi breed chooses what command to respond to and what not to respond to.
The Borzoi dog breed is usually very tall and comes in different colors. Despite the fact that they can cope well in a small house, the Borzoi dog breeds will do extremely well in a larger house especially one that has ample space or ground.
The lifespan of the Borzoi is around ten years though others may live much longer and weigh up to 120 pounds. All in all, one of the main reasons why many dog owners prefer this dog breed is the dog’s reserved and non-barking nature. The Borzoi breed will only bark when playing with other dogs or when it’s anxious.
The Bull Terrier
Among the largest non-barking group of dogs, the Bull Terrier is the smallest with some weighing around 20 kilos while others were weighing 35 kilos.
Despite the fact that they are widely known for their extremely powerful bodies, this English breed is very mild. In fact, they have been nicknamed the white cavaliers because they do not start fights though they are usually able to finish them.
Furthermore close to a fifth of this dog breed are deaf while many others are prone to heart disorders, obesity, luxating Patella and skin allergies.
Like the Greyhound, the Bull Terrier has a very high prey instinct and may not do well with other pets especially those of a smaller size like cats. All in all, Bull Terriers live up to 10 years and are not a suitable pet for first-time dog owners.
