2. Suddenly, and without the dog being able to see it coming, throw a towel on the dog’s head and shoulders and see how long it takes for him or her to break free.
0-15 seconds = 5 points
16-30 seconds = 4 points
31-60 seconds = 3 points
61-120 seconds = 2 points
The dog does not succeed after 2 minutes (which has happened before) = 1 point
3. Place a treat on the floor and place a towel over it. Grab your stopwatch and see how long it takes for the dog to get the treat.
0-15 seconds = 5 points
16-30 seconds = 4 points

61-120 seconds = 2 points
The dog tries getting the treat but fails to get it = 1 point
The dog shows no interest in either the treat or the puzzle itself = 0 points
4. Place a treat in the corner of the test area making sure that the dog sees you doing it and let the dog lose, then score him based on what happens.
Dog goes straight for the treat = 5 points
Dog searches the area systematically and finds the treat = 4 points
Dog searches randomly around, finds the treat in under 45 seconds = 3 points
Dog searches the area but fails to find the treat = 2 points
The dog shows no interest in either the treat or the puzzle itself = 1 point
5. After step number 4 has been completed, restrain the dog and place another treat in a different corner of the testing area. Remove the dog form the testing area for 5 minutes (in which the dog must be played with a little) and then return the dog to the testing area and let him or her lose. Scoring, just like on the previous test, is done based on the dog’s actions:
Dog goes straight for the treat = 5 points
Dog goes to the corner from the previous test, then goes for the corner with the treat = 4 points
Dog searches the area systematically and finds the treat = 3 points
Dog searches randomly around , finds the treat in under 45 seconds = 2points
Dog searches the area but fails to find the treat =1 point
The dog shows no interest in either the treat or the puzzle itself = 0 points
6. Place a treat under a low platform, making sure that it is low and far enough that it cannot be reached by the dog’s mouth or paws and let your dog try and get the treat while you see how long it takes for the dog to do so.
The dog gets the treat in under 60 seconds = 5 points
The dog gets the treat between 1 and 3 minutes = 4 points
The dog uses his or her muzzle and paws but fails to get to the treat = 3 points
The dog uses only his muzzle a couple of times and gives up = 2 points
The dog does not try and go for the treat = 1 point
7. This one is a bit tricky because you might need to make a few trips moving your dog from room to room, but here is how it goes: casually leave the dog’s sight by going into the next room, and with a calm voice call out the refrigerator, movies, and then the dog’s name. Call the dog’s name again if he or she did not come the first time you called, in this exact order. Here is how scoring goes for this one:
The dog comes the first time you call out his or her name = 5 points
The dog does not come the first time you call out his or her name but comes the second time you do so = 4 points
The dog comes when you call Refrigerator = 3 points
The dog comes when you call Movies = 2 points
The dog does not come at all = 1
8. This one will require a bit of creativity on your behalf but nevertheless it is a good test to give your dog. Show your dog a treat through a slit in a large cardboard barricade which is too high to be jumped by the dog, and the slit itself being too narrow for the dog to fit through. You, as the handler will have to keep encouraging the dog to get the treat for exactly 60 seconds and then stop. Use your stopwatch to keep track of the dog’s time and score accordingly:
The dog goes around the barrier and gets the treat in 0-15 seconds = 5 points
The dog goes around the barrier and gets the treat in 16-30 seconds = 4 points
The dog goes around the barrier and gets the treat in 31-60 seconds = 3 points
The dog goes around the barrier and gets the treat in 1-2 minutes = 2 points
The dog tries to go through the slit and eventually gives up = 1 point
The dog shows no interest whatsoever -0 points.
