Dogs are a great addition to any family, but you have to agree that they are also a huge responsibility. Your dog’s health and comfort are among the most important things you are responsible for, which is why your dog should have their own bed. A DIY dog bed frame is also a great idea if you’re not ready to invest in a more permanent solution.

Keep in mind that without a proper bed to sleep in, chances are your dog will develop health problems such as a backache or bad hips as they grow older. Still, buying a dog bed may prove quite a challenge if we consider the wide offer and the high prices for the really good ones. Even more, if your dog is just a puppy, he or she will quickly outgrow the bed you buy now.

By building a DIY dog bed frame you can save up on cash, but you will also be able to custom-tailor it so that it fulfills your dog’s unique needs. For example, if your dog is small, it can be difficult to find a dog bed frame they can climb onto easily. By making it yourself, you can adjust the height to suit your dog needs.

That’s why today, we would like to challenge you to try a DIY dog bed frame. We created this article, first of all, to show you how easy and cost-effective a DIY dog bed frame can be. Therefore, we’ll start with the benefits of having a custom bed frame for Fido and move on to the most important aspects to consider. Finally, we have a step-by-step how to build the bed frame, using simple materials and some tools.

Benefits of Building a Bed Frame for Your Dog

If you’re still not convinced your dog needs a special bed where he’ll feel safe and comfortable, below are some of the main benefits you must know before starting the project:

It is very important for your pet to rest their bones and joints after a day full of play and new discoveries. That’s why it’s important to have a cozy cushion inside the frame you’re building.  Moreover, as your dog ages, the cushion will be crucial for their health.

If you purchase a commercial dog bed frame, chances are it comes with its own cushion—which might not be as comfortable as the cushion you would’ve picked out for your dog. Since your dog will be sleeping in this cushion for many years—at least until the cushion grows hard and too uncomfortable to sleep on—it’s best to use an ergonomic one even if it’s a bit expensive.

The bed frame will protect your pet from extreme temperatures and keep them healthy and playful all year round. If your dog has to sleep on the floor or outside during the cold winters, it does not sound very comfortable, does it? That’s why good insulation is a must.

Insulated dog bed frames that are available in stores are typically quite expensive. And there’s no guarantee that they can really keep the cold out effectively. On the other hand, if you make the dog bed frame yourself, you can add as many element protections to it as you want.

Hair and Odor Control

Even though we love our dogs a lot, it is inevitable that we would be occasionally bothered by the dog’s odor and hair. If your dog does not have their own place to sleep and stay, they will have the tendency to sleep on your couch. Therefore, after some time, your furniture will start having a disturbing odor and you will have to deal with dog hair everywhere. Why not avoid all these problems and create a dog bed instead?

Furniture Damage Control

Apart from leaving their hair all over the place, young dogs also have the tendency to chew or scratch bed corners. This is one part that most dog owners do not like, especially when they live with their pets in the apartment.

You can solve this problem with a dog bed frame. Your dog will immediately acknowledge it as their own space and whenever they feel the need to chew or scratch something, they will do this there.

Personal Space

Just like you and your family members, your dog needs their own space. Let’s make a small exercise of imagination. When you are upset or you just want to not be disturbed, what do you do? You go to your room, right? The same happens with your pet. If they just want to have a nap or lay down in their own place, then their bed is the ideal space.

A customized bed frame makes this personal space all the more special for your dog. They will know that you’ve made this for them with your own hands. They will surely appreciate all the love and attention you’re giving them.

What to Consider When You Build a Dog Bed Frame

Dog owners are often willing to do anything for their pet’s comfort. That’s why while building a DIY dog bed frame, you may want to make it so that your dog will have a place to sleep in that hits all the right spots. To achieve this goal, there are some aspects that you should take into consideration:

Before you shop for the materials that you will use for the bed frame, it is very important to think of your dog’s size. If you have a small dog, you do not have to waste money and material on building a big bed frame.

Your dog will feel comfortable and safe in a frame that is strong enough to support its body weight. If you do not know how to establish the dimensions of the bed frame, you will first have to measure your pet. Then you can add 5 inches on each side and so you have the perfect bed size.

Easy Cleaning

You have to take into consideration the fact that your dog is not a human being. Therefore, they cannot clean its bed by themselves. Choosing some materials that are easy to clean will make your life a lot easier.

The place where you will install the dog frame plays a very important role. For instance, if your dog will sleep outside, it is crucial to choose materials that are resistant to fungus, mold and other weather hazards.

The materials’ quality plays a very important role when you decide to build the bed frame by yourself. Even though you try to stick to the budget, we would recommend you to choose durable, high-quality materials. These will not only resist to environmental hazards but will also stay usable for a longer period.

Moreover, keep in mind that changing your dog’s bed is not recommended. They get attached very fast to their own places and tend to suffer a lot when their comfort zone is altered. This is why you will need to create a long-lasting bed frame.

Steps to Building a Dog Bed Frame

Now that you’ve got a general idea of the things you need to take into consideration if you want to build a bed frame for your dog, let’s move on to the step by step guide.

By following our instructions, you need not be afraid that you will need expensive materials to build the dog bed frame. Moreover, you do not need any special tools to finalize this project. As long as you are enthusiastic about it and you follow the steps below, everything will be piece of cake.

Materials needed:

  • Different size woodcuts
  • 1 ¼’’ pocket hole screws
  • 2 ½’’ pocket hole screws
  • 1 ¼’’ finishing nails
  • Wood glue to put everything together
  • Paint—you can choose whatever color you want or one that you think will make your dog like their place better. Our recommendation is to choose a natural wood color that will resist the trials of time and the elements, especially if you place the bed frame outdoors.

Step 1 – Cutting the wood

You will need to cut the wood according to the dimensions you would want the frame to be. If we think of a medium-sized frame, the woodcuts should be the following:

  • 6 pieces of 2″ x 6″ at 45″ for the base
  • 2 pieces of 1″ x 12″ at 33″ for both sides
  • 1 pieces of 1″ x 12″ at 46 1/2″ for the back
  • 1 smaller piece of 1″ x 4″ at 45″ for the front
  • 2 pieces of 1″ x 2″ at 11 1/4″ for the front trim
  • 4 pieces of 1″ x 3″ at 11 1/4″ for the side trim
  • 4 pieces of 1″ x 3″ at 29 3/4″ for the side trim

If you find it difficult to cut the wood pieces, you can also use a pallet. It is very easy to assemble and transform into the perfect bed for your dog. What’s more, if you plan to install it indoors, it will match with any type of furniture or design.

Step 2 – Create the base of the bed frame

Use the 6 boards of 2″ x 6″ to create the base. Of course, if your dog is smaller or bigger, then you can adjust the base according to its size.

You will need a Kreg Jig set to build a stable base. Set the tool at 1 ½’’ setting and use the 2 ½’’ pocket hole screws to fix all the pieces together. You can use as many screws as you want. The most important thing is to make a stable base for your dog.

Step 3 – Attach the panels and trims of the frame

The Kreg Jig set will help you also with this step. Use it at ¾’’ setting and fix the sides with the 1 ¼’’ pocket hole screws to attach the left and right panels. Then use the same equipment and set to fix the panels onto the back and the front of the bed frame.

The front trim is easily fixed on the bed frame with some wood glue and 1 ¼’’ finishing nails. You can use a nailer if you want to finish the job faster. You can also use finishing nails. Repeat the same procedure and also fix the side trims.

Step 4 – Paint the dog bed frame

Now that you have everything in place, you can start designing the bed frame. As we mentioned above, you can use whatever color you want. However, a natural wood color would be a better choice especially if your dog will sleep outside.

Remember also to re-paint it every year. Even though you choose a resistant paint, the rain and sun will deteriorate the paint in time. While painting, make sure do it outside and place some newspapers on the floor or the ground so that you’ll be able to clean up easily afterward.

Step 5 – Personalize your dog’s bed frame

Once the bed frame is ready, it is time to challenge your imagination and create a comfortable and attractive place for your dog. Your dog’s bed frame cannot be complete if you do not personalize it. Therefore, you can add several toys inside that will attract your dog and will make them understand that this is their place.

Furthermore, your dog’s bed needs to have an identity. Thus, we would suggest painting your dog’s name on the frame. You can also cut the letters in wood, paint them in different colors and stick them on the frame. Quite nice, isn’t it?

Also, don’t forget to add a soft cushion in the frame. You do not have to go for shopping for an expensive dog cushion that will not stay plush for long in your dog’s bed. If you were able to create the bed frame by yourself, you will definitely be able to design the cushion as well. Here are some tips on how to create a cheap, fun and comfortable bed cushion for your dog:

Use an old pillow

Do you have an old pillow that you do not use anymore? That is the solution! It will be the perfect cushion for your dog. Moreover, if you want to keep it for a longer period, you can use a removable cover. Therefore, you will be able to wash it more often and so keep your dog’s environment very clean. For example, you can use denim or vinyl.

Use an old sweater

Do you not have any old pillows? No worries! You must have an old sweater that you can easily convert. The moment your dog sniffs the sweater, they will recognize their owner’s scent and will be more relaxed in the new place. When you use this option, it is very important to make sure that there are no holes or tears in the sweater. In case, if there are, you can still sew them up.

In order to create a cozy cushion for your dog, you can fill the sweater with some foam or old clothing. Keep in mind that cotton is not a good choice for filling because it changes its shape over time. Once you have filled the sweater with enough material, you can sew up all the edges. Could you think of anything simpler?

Wrap Up

When your family size increases with one “member”, everything starts to roll around it. Dogs can be your best friend and a great companion for kids, and you’ll often want to care for your dog the way your dog cares about you.

This is why there are many dog owners who spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on dog beds. Moreover, apart from buying the bed frame, people invest a lot in the mattress, cushions, comforters or many other inventions that are now available on the market. But why spend so much money on a dog bed frame when you can do it on your own? Follow the steps above and you will be able to create a nice place for your “family member” easily.
