Dog lovers know that all dogs are beautiful regardless of breed, size, color, and disability. Dogs in adoption centers are sometimes thin, abused, and look like they’ve been through the mill. But no matter what they look like, they all deserve our love because they give back so much more. If you’re adopting a disabled dog, we have some suggestions on one eyed dog names.

There are people who might think that giving this kind of name to a dog is offensive or undignified, but the fact that your dog only has one eye isn’t something that you need to hide. As we’re sure you’re aware, one-eyed dogs are just as good as normal dogs—but Old One Eye is just too common a name for your awesome dog.

If you’re looking for a great one-eyed dog name, you’ve come to the right place because we have some suggestions for you. We will start with pirate names since it is not uncommon for pirates to only have one eye. Then we will move on to names inspired by pop culture characters, punny names, and heterochromatic names.

Pirate Names

If you’ve seen pirate movies, most of the pirates depicted on film usually have an eye patch and a peg-leg. According to sources, pirates have only one eye because they were wounded in battle. The same is true for their peg leg or hook.

Even if your dog wasn’t wounded in battle but lost his eye for various reasons, giving him a pirate-themed name will make his disability sound more badass.

  • Blackbeard was part of the so-called Golden Age of Piracy. Born Edward Teach, he was an intimidating figure who captured a French slave ship and had it fitted with 40 guns. Renamed Queen Anne’s Revenge, he blockaded the port of Charleston in North Carolina until the residents met his demands for a large chest of medicine. He was killed in battle by the Royal Navy and legend holds that he received 20 stab wounds and five gunshot wounds before he went down.

  • Calico Jack received a pardon for his earlier pirating activates but returned to his old “job” a year after he was set free. Among Jack’s followers were the two famous female pirates: Anne Bonny and Mary Read. In October 1720, a pirate hunting boat overtook Jack and his drunken crew. He was later executed for piracy.

  • Captain Barbosa was also a character from Pirates of the Caribbean, but the Barbosa brothers are real-life siblings who became rich capturing ships in the Mediterranean Seas during the 16th century.

  • Captain James Hook is one of our favorite fictional pirates. He haunted Kidd’s Creek in the fictional world of James M. Barrie’s Peter Pan.

  • Captain Kidd was once a respected privateer who was assigned to hunt down pirates in the Indian Ocean, but he later turned pirate himself. After a run-in with the British East India Company, he was arrested before he made it back to England. He was later executed, and his body was displayed in the banks of the River Thames as a warning to other pirates.

  • L’Olonnais plied the Caribbean during the 1600s. Also known as Jean-David Nau, he was one of the cruelest pirates in history. According to pirate historian Alexander Exquemelin, L’Olonnais hacked his victims into pieces and used a cord to strangle them until their eyes popped out. He was also suspected to have carved out a man’s heart and taking a bite. Karma came to haunt him as he was later captured by cannibals.

  • Madame Cheng inherited her husband’s “business” 2 years after he died. She expanded the business by taking over an estimated 1,800 ships and 70,000 men during her glory years. She received a pardon in 1810 when Chinese authorities ordered a crackdown on piracy. She lived out her years running an opium smuggling operation.

  • Willie is a very popular pirate name. You can give this name to your dog in remembrance of the dead one-eyed pirate in the movie Goonies. It can also be after Will Turner in the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Some of these pirates have gruesome history, but nevertheless, their names have lived hundreds of years after they all died. Pirating might be bad business, but the names of these pirates are truly the stuff of legends, which is why you should consider these suggestions to name your one-eyed dog.

Not all of these pirates have one eye, but they are all tough characters that live up to the title of “pirate.” In our opinion, they are also better choices compared to naming your dog Pirate.

Heterochromatic Names

Heterochromia is the condition of having different colored irises. It appears in humans and certain breeds of cats and dogs. Dogs susceptible to heterochromia include Siberian Huskies, American Foxhounds, and Australian Shepherds.

If you have a dog with heterochromatic eyes, you might want to check our suggestions here. It is common for heterochromia to manifest as one blue eye and one brown eye in dogs, so that’s the combination we will be focusing on.

  • You can name them after one of their eyes. Blue and Brownie might be too common, so perhaps variations like Cobalt, Sky, Coco, and Hazel are good choices.

  • Alternatively, you can combine names that mean blue and brown. For instance, Aoki Bruno, Bluford Don, Achilles Bleu, or Duncan Indigo.

  • You can also opt to name them after celebrities who have heterochromia. Choices include Henry Cavil, Kate Bosworth, David Bowie, Jane Seymour, and Max Scherzer.

  • Multi-color actually has many synonyms that you can use to call your dog. For instance, you can call him Motely, Poly (polychromatic), Psych (psychedelic), Kal (kaleidoscope), and Priss (prism). They can also be called Iris to refer to the color of their eyes.

When it comes to names, you can be as creative as you want for your one blue eye one brown eye dog names.

Wrap Up

white dog with one eye

It doesn’t matter what you name a one-eyed dog or a heterochromatic dog. What is important is that they will be able to learn the name quickly and that you’re happy with the name. However, this does not mean that any name that comes to mind will do. Careful consideration is still needed when naming your dog.

A good name for your dog will make him or her feel like they are truly yours. Aside from this, it also gives them a sense of identity. In dog parks, for example, there are many dogs and teaching your dog to respond to their names make it easier for you to call them. So, the more unique the name, the better it is for your dog to recognize it in public.

Your dog’s name is perhaps the most important sound he will learn. Always remember that your dog does not really understand what you’re saying but is responding to the pitch of your voice. Having a distinctive name will prevent confusion for all parties involved.
