Taking care of your pet is not an easy task. Those who consider bringing a puppy in the house need to think if they have what it takes to look after a new family member. To be more exact, you need to be ready not only to play with it, but also to control the quality of the food you provide. At the same time, there are dogs who suffer from allergies or are sensitive to certain ingredients. Baking treats for your four legged friend is the best way to keep it healthy and happy. The dog cookie recipes presented below are easy to make so anybody can try them.

If you are wondering why you should bake treats for your pet instead of buying them, you need to think about the food you eat. Just because your dog cannot avoid unhealthy ingredients, it does not mean that it cannot get sick. Furthermore, you can keep your dog happy even if you bake something simple, like peanut butter biscuits. With few ingredients and inspiration, you can offer your dog a balanced diet, preventing health problems like obesity or heart diseases. In this article you can find ten delicious recipes that your pet will love.

Homemade treats benefits

Homemade dog cookies are the perfect snack for your four legged friend. If you are wondering why it is worth spending some time in the kitchen for it, here are the major benefits that have a direct impact on its health:

  • you can control the ingredients;
  • can give them a delicious taste without putting too much sugar;
  • they are not expensive because you can bake much more treats that can be found in a box;
  • they can keep the dog safe from allergies or diseases.

If you check the ingredients listed on a bag of dog cookies you will be surprised to see that you know only few of them. Just because your pet likes them, it does not make them healthy.

When you start baking your own treats, you can actually avoid unhealthy chemicals. Preservatives, for example, are bad for the pet’s organism, and still they can be found anywhere. There are studies that claim that certain chemicals can influence the behavior, causing the dog to be submissive, or aggressive, depending on how they affect the brain. Furthermore, if they are not good for humans, they are not any better for dogs.

Treats for your dog and wallet

The delicious taste of dog treats is given in high proportion by chemicals. Baking means giving a particular taste by using natural ingredients and avoiding sugar or saturated fats. On long term, you can prevent diabetes and obesity, but also heart problems that can lead to death. If you use the right things, you can cook treats that can clean the teeth, keep the gums healthy and even keep the coat shiny.

Though it sounds expensive to shop for ingredients rather than for the snacks, in fact, the quantity you obtain is bigger. When you buy in bulk, you actually achieve important savings, and you can also use things that you already have in the pantry.

All homemade treats taste better than the ones you buy in stores. An important aspect that makes them tempting for your dog is the fact that you do not add artificial flavorings. Furthermore, there are products that are so harmful for your pet that can lead to kidney failure or heart problems.

Just like in the case of humans, certain chemicals can lead to cancer. Not to mention that allergies are familiar in the animal kingdom, and vets are accustomed to offer first aid to dogs that have eaten certain snacks. As a result, there are many pet owners who need to avoid the food that makes the dog feel sick.

PRODUCT QUANTITY
Wheat flour 2 cups
Rolled oats 1 cup
Peanut butter 1/3 cup
Hot water 1 and 1/4 cups

After you place them on the tray, and before you put them in the oven, you can whisk an egg with a fork and brush them with the mixture. Though this last step is not mandatory, the egg provides a nice sheen after the cookies are baked.

    These looked yummy! Although I would prefer baking without eggs because my dog tends to scratch due to allergies. Hope the no egg goodies will taste great, too.

  • Janis Schley

    Great article and recipes! I would always choose homemade food for my dog. My dog is allergic to few ingredients, so we were forced to find the alternative. We are using horse meat, which my dog really likes. And, I must admit, he is 10 years old, and we are getting nothing but compliments for his look (not a single grey hair) and liveliness.
